My son (11 years old) does jiujitsu and he had been training in boxing for a couple years. I was a former amatuer boxer so I train him. We decided it was time for him to get braces so I am assuming no Mouthguard would truly work with boxing even if it is designed for braces. Even the dentist wasnt sure about it. The disappointing thing is his boxing was starting to develope. His jab was starting to become very educated in sparring and defensive instincts were developing. Anyone have any experience with braces and boxing?

Being that he also likes MMA, maybe now would be a good time for him to learn kicking through atraditional martial art that doesnt go to the head. Which traditional martial arts has kick most similar to Muay Thai kicks?

You'll find plenty of amateur boxers who have braces. Your son can box with braces and he can compete in usaboxing with braces. To compete you'll need the orthodontist to sign the required form. The form stays in his book. Personally I like brain-pad mouthpieces.

The main problem I can see with braces is an increase in cut risk, so a good dentist made full mouth graud should work just like normal. It will need to be replaced pretty often though do to interior wear and tear form the braces. He'll have to have one anyway for any martial art, even point based, striking competition.

Remember also that most dentists, like doctors, really don't understand sport specific issues. Try looking for a dentist that does custom mouth guards. They will have a much better idea of the pro's and con's.

Heck give it try with the boxing, and a serious custom full mouth guard. As you are the coach you should be able to tell real quickly how things are going.

kyokushin has the most muay thai-ish kicks, but they do got to the head once in a while. I had braces when I was 10 and did tkd (now I think of it, the newbie level in tkd didnt kick to the head yet). I even got punched at the schoolyard in those days, didnt do any damage either.

And the gel-filled shockdocters should work with braces

Cool thanks to you and everyone who responded. Very helpful and much better news then I expected.

Ya in my first amatuer boxing fight I had braces. A good mouthguard makes it so its not an issue.

Lingual braces are an option. They are behind the teeth. lingual braces - Google Search

I fought for three years with a Brain Pad mouth guard. I had to mold it to fit the movement of my teeth a bunch of times but it still kept it's form. Great mouth guard. I would not recommend the mouth guards designed for people with braces/gel guards. Every time you open your mouth, they reshape and pop out. The custom fitted ones aren't worth the money until he gets his braces off. They will only cover the top teeth and you would have to replace them every few months.

As for cuts, I didn't get any from the Brain Pad as it completely covered my wires. They are approved by a lot of boxing, kickboxing and karate organizations as well.

Hope that helps.

I have also braces during my teens while training seidokaikan karate. I have bought double mouthguard for braces so I can continue sparring and training. I Prefer him to study Kyokushin Karate

Guy at my gym had the wire from the braces pop off and poke right through the side of his cheek.

Coach pulled it back through his cheek and yanked the rest of it off the other teeth and he finished the fight.

That'd be Muay Thai.
It has traditions and (obviously) Muay Thai kicks.

Have you asked your son's orthodontist what he recommends regarding a mouth guard?

I had braces, and played football, and the ortho even gave me a double mouthpiece that fit over my braces. His orthodontist would have a better idea of how to protect his mouth from braces rather than the dentist. Plus he could put orthodontic wax in all of his braces to cut down on the abrasions. Maybe another option is a double custom.

Good question. I'm thinking about getting veneers made and it's possible that I may eventually have to get braces, too. (LOL! 31 year-old with braces!) I don't want to quit martial arts so I'd love to hear more about this.

Muay Thai IS a traditional martial art. ;)

But I get what you're saying.

I'd recommend Kyokushin Karate or other forms of Knockdown Karate.

The advantage for your kid's situation is that, when sparring / competing, you're not allowed to target the head/face with your hands. And kicks usually go to the side of the head/face rather then directly to the front/mouth, so it's even better for your young'un.

i have braces and i just started doing mma i've used a couple of differant mouth guards for wrestling and my favorite is the one i have now. its a shock doc double for braces and i havnt had a single problem with it
