PWD PWD 1029: Getting Rubbed The Wrong Way By Keith Lee

He did a cover of Nothing Else Matters which is freaking amazing.

Listening now. Sounds like something that would play at the end of an episode of Sons of Anarchy where the shots keep jumping between Jax and Tara getting their boys tucked into bed, Gemma and Clay having a nice dinner, and Tig and Chibbs brutally murdering a priest.

Well, either way, someone's been ripped off. Sinclair must have howled with laughter when that deal was done. How the hell do you manage to be taken for $40m for Ring of Honor?!

How much would they pay for LOLImpact?

Bon Jovi put on one hell of a show when I saw them in the 80's.

I've seen them a few times, but he hasn't. They played a bunch of shows the summer that the new Giants Stadium opened. I saw them three times there and once in Philly. Philly was good, but the Jersey shows were something special.
I saw him in 2006 and it was a solid show. The only thing I remember about it was that he walked over to the front row singing and a lady just full on reached out and grabbed his crotch to the point that he had to physically pull her off <Lmaoo>

Sounds like she was trying to pull him off.

SOA is basically a music genre to me. Not quite rock, not quite country and feels like the passage of time.

I found a playlist on Spotify called I am Negan that somehow every single song on it just makes me picture him walking around the compound in the leather jacket twirling the bat around on a quiet night while working on his bike. So I have a Negan genre in my head as well.

I can picture them all riding away to this on the way to a dangerous deal while Gemma and Tara look on concerned from the clubhouse that this might really be the last ride

Now, that does beg the question as to whether WWE did it to drive the price up, because I cannot see where a $40m valuation for a promotion that the parent company paid less than a quarter of that sum for, which had to go on hiatus because it wasn't financially viable, didn't have a roster because they were released and worked on a freelance basis, wouldn't have a TV deal, or any distribution.

It wouldn't surprise me if WWE heard that Tony Khan, (not AEW, it's fully owned by Tony) was looking to buy ROH, and they said "We'll give you this much for it" so Sinclair say "Well, WWE just gave us an offer..." and Tony dipped into his inheritence a little more.

As an entity, it's a smart purchase, but I can't see where a valuation of nearly 10 times that of WCW's (when adjusted for inflation) comes from. The only thing I can really think of is debt repayment, but I don't know how much ROH owed.

there’s a bit more to it. The wcw purchase was a great deal, everyone understands that. Wwe got it for far less than it was worth. Also, Bruce Pritchard has claimed on his podcast that part of the purchase agreement was 20 million (I have to check this number - going off memory) in ad buys on the back end. If that’s true then that’s a much different deal than most have been peddling for years.

Even after all that, yes Tony probably over paid. But if there is a network there’s potential for content in terms of wrestler documentaries. How many current aew (and wwe) talents had a run in roh. So he may be over paying for the content iteself but if he does a network it might actually be worth the money as he needs content to fill
It up.

Which is why I believe that Sinclair rinsed Tony. ROH, for all intents and purposes, was dead in the water, which is why I think that maybe debt repayments could be a factor in it, as well as WWE putting in a dummy bid to put Tony out of pocket further.

It could be worth something, but $40m? I don't think so.

Its literally been up for purchase before and if he outbid wwe it makes complete sense.

And like I said he's a Billionare. His daddy is worth like 4 tines as much as vince/wwe alone...its spare change too him.

Plus they get all the roh equipment and an in built "developmental" brand

I'd love to shit on TK but the crazy thing is $40 million really seems like nothing in today's day and age. Youtubers and instagram influencers make $10 million in a day doing NFT and crypto coin rug pulls every day.

Tony Kahn when he started his rasslin promotion vs Tony Kahn today
What is this business doing to our fresh faced baby boy!

People getting worked up over $40 million talking about Tony getting fleeced not realizing in the year 2022 $40 million is peanuts for media.

The $30-$40 million number is probably inflated bullshit anyway since it's coming from a single source on a wrestling dirtsheet called BodySlam.net who himself "heard from a source". Then you got Fightful saying they heard $20 million. Nobody actually knows, but with everything in wrestling dirtsheets the numbers you're hearing are probably inflated.

But even if it is $40 million that's literally nothing if a streaming deal is on the table. Scripted TV dramas have season production budgets of $100 million now days with pilots getting made for $20-$30 million.

I know it might be weird for us normal folk to fathom, but $40 million is nothing for media and I doubt Tony Khan bought ROH without other deals being in place for him to actually start making money off of it.

Do you think Vince will congratulate Big Tony on his big purchase?

Probably not. But Vince better be juiced to the gills for his match at Mania. I don't care if it kills him, Pete. Die for my entertainment!

It’s a unique situation where it may not be worth 40 million, but it is worth that much to Tony depending on his aspirations. Tony may get a return on it if he does do some sort of on demand deal.

I think of it like a large biochem company such as Amgen or Pfizer buying out a small company for a potential therapeutic or technology. Often times the company will pay several multiples of what it’s actually worth at the time of purchase (early stages/ proof of concept but nowhere near fda approved), but it’s worth it to them financially to protect their assets and potentially develop it and make money later. it’s always a gamble on potential and to protect their assets, but in the long run worth it and nobody considers it as Pfizer or Amgen getting rinsed. But it’s only worth it for a big company like that to buy it. If it was bought by smaller private investors they would pay far less as they would value it on face.
