What's the reason behind this pre-fight drama action and when did it actually start?
It's interesting from psychological point of view, of course..carries a symbolism of rivalry.

I'm wondering about the origins of this procedure.

Joe Rogan invented it so he could get inbetween the fighters screwing his face up with a hardon

Drama.

I like it. Adds tension to the fight when some fighters try to play it all cool or try to act tough and look funny.. same with face offs at the weigh ins. And the final one before the fight lol.

Gives us experts a chance to see who is going to win the fight without having to watch the fight.

Because you need eye contact to make it gay. Wait...

Couldn't imagine weigh ins without face off. It would be like Woodley not mentioning something related to racism in one of his speeches.

Because we want to see the meat before it gets slaughtered. Nothing like seeing the thoroughbreds before war.

It's for the media.

It became a thing when Sharkey stared down Dempsey, or at least that's the story out there.
Became more popular, once TV and media were introduced and boxing got more popular it became a staple. Makes for a good picture, no? I'm sure it has deeper historical roots from various prize fighting/bareknuckle fighting traditions as well.
