Help me explain to my friend why this is not good and can hurt you in the long run. I am not very good at debating.

Nothing wrong with marikawa on trees.

tell him ghosts live in banana trees, and not to kick and punch banana trees. or he will be sorely haunted.

So is it actually ok or is not? People have told me its not good, but I have not gotten a scientific answer as to why.

I kick trees for shin conditioning. If I punch them I always end up with wrist problems after a few weeks.

search function please. this topic has been done sooooo many times.

I will admit i am not expert but i thought it was fine providing the tree has some give. I would not go kicking the chinese elm on the corner or the redwood in your backyard.

In Thai Land the trees they kick have a rubbery core in the middle. Its not that solid, kicking a tree that is solid all the way through is stupid.

I found nothing in the search function, and everyone always has mixed views which makes it seem more opinionated then anything because they have nothing to back it up.

If I remember correctly they have a dense core but the outter layers have give to them, so the harder you punch, the denser the material becomes

So is no one replying because they don't know or?

As long as your sensible with how much power you use lots of things can be used for conditioning and skin buildup.

Kicking and punching trees makes your bones thicker and harder by causing trama to them. I watched some science show about it.

Thats why if your punching and kicking trees you should start out young when your bones are developing.

Thats what and why they do it in thi land

Kicking trees is bad the same reason punching rocks is bad - you get arthritis in the long run. All these karetekas and American GIs who came back from Japan to spread some kind of "iron body" training, I bet you most of them have painful arthritic joints in their old age.

And what's the POINT of hardening your body? People did that in days past because they had to fight to survive (because dying is infinitely worse than getting joint pain), and tried their best to turn their bodies into weapons. But why the hell would you do it today?

Even that, those were the poor dumb folks. Most people would just wear armor, and use weapons - like swords and shit - instead of developing their "iron palm". People like monks would do body training because they did want to brandish weapons. Don't forget that Karate, and pretty much all unarmed martial arts, were developed by people who didn't have access to weapons and armor, and hence were forced to develop unarmed martial arts.

I don't see Muay Thai champions kicking trees today, why should you? <-- don't believe the stupid myths, not very many people doing Muay Thai in Thailand today kick trees. Just like not many people practicing Kyokushin in Japan punch rocks

Is that a good enough response for your friend? :)

Also, you wanted a technical explanation.

Well, in general repetitive stress on your body isn't good. Why do athletes have more problems later on in life than regular people?

Because things like the cartiledge in your joints, the various components that provide lubrication and support your bone structure, have a finite ability to absorb punishment and a lot of these body structures are irreplacable - once you blow it out, once you tear it you are done for without major surgery to repair it.

That's why unneccessary trauma such as kicking trees is bad. Because you accelerate the damage to your body you're already doing just by doing martial arts, or any other form of hardcore athleticism (for example playing tennis is good for your health, playing tennis on a highly competitive level of course destroys your body).

If you really wnt to kick trees i would do it in a private place, cuz ur gonna look like a loser at your local park kicking trees

trees dont absorb energy. I have seen faber wrap a pad around a tree in his yard.
