I think I tore a lower back muscle. At first it was just "sore" and I continued to stretch and train through it. Then something just "snapped" one day. It's a sharp stabbing pain in the lower back and at times I feel like I can't even walk.

All the symptoms I have correlate with a torn muscle. So how long were you out of training?
I'm thinking that a tourney in Feb that I wanted to compete in is out the window. Oh well, at leat I can eat milk and cookies in the middle of the night again.:icon_chee

Oh yeah, did you need an MRI to diagnose the tear? I had x-rays already and they showed my spine is straight at the lower back section (which indicates that my muscles are in a spasm and pulling the curve in the spine straight).

i did that on a hack squat machine i was out almost 2 months i seriously couldnt sit or sleep comfortably the entire first month... painkillers helped but ugh..... i still have never done hack squats since or gone heavy beyond a comfortable level.... it was totally my fauly i was feeling great and threw on another plate per side and snap.....

If you've gotten X-rays, I'm assuming you've seen a doctor... and I'm also assuming that he's given you his/her diagnosis, or a referral to get an MRI? I'm sure there are people here who CAN answer your question, but I think your doctor is more qualified to answer.

Anyway, it sounds like whatever injury you have is going to sideline you for a bit. The advice I'd like to pass along is to just take your time getting better. More often than not, I see people aggravate their injuries.

you need a mri, a chiropractor can write a script for you.
My "muscle pull" turned out to be some major back problems that only a mri could reveal.

Just got an MRI ordered. As much as I hate to do it, I'll probably sit out of training for another month. It's frustrating when you can't train.

Wow, this happend to me my first day of training, and like 4 times after that in the last 4 months. Everytime I bend over and take a deep breath it feels like my back is going to burst.

Thinking I should go to the doctor..

Oh Lord...

I hurt my back five years ago, and I only just recently started lifting and training again.

DO NOT TRY TO COME BACK TOO FAST!!!!

That is what killed me. The instant it started feeling better I got back on the mat, and promptly reinjured it. I would also seriously investigate whether or not you have a herniated disk, as the two injuries can feel similar but one is much worse than the other (I ended up with 2 herniated disks, in the end).

Take care of yourself, and take it slow. These injuries are so easy to repeat if you don't give yourself time to fully heal. I know it's hard, but stay on the bench until you're well and truly better. Don't make the mistake I did, or you could be out a long, long time.

Dangit! This is exactly what happened. I got an MRI and found out I two buldging discs. The annular ligament (the ligaments that connect the vertebra together and hold the disc in place) is torn and the disc is pushing out on one side.

Holy smokes this is painful! I need to try and strengthen the ligament and get the discs back in place. Going to physical therapy but it's almost worthless. The PT place is mostly geared towards old people recovering from a slip and fall. That's actually most PT places. They are not geared towards athletes. I need to try and find a place that is and knows how to get me healthy again.

It makes me mad/sad/angry/depressed to think I may be out of training for a long while.

holy fuck i better go to a doctor cuz my back is so fuckin sore lately thanks OP

I pulled a lower back muscle a few months back, and a steady icing, ibuprofoen, and hot baths put me on the road to recovery. But it took about a month and a half before it healed.

Haven't had trouble since.

I tore some of my peri-spinal muscles and pulled my lumbar region last summer'ish, I ended up having to go to the emergency room and got hooked up with muscle relaxants/percocet and was out about 2 weeks from BJJ and about a week and a few days from the gym before I went back to do light workouts.

Just make sure you feel alright before going back, don't rush it, keep moving and maintaining range of motion as much as you can but don't force anything.

Go to the doctor and get Cyclobenzaprine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia It really helped me out.

awesome advice that i will be following. I just hurt my lower back last week and took 5 days off, felt like i was OK so i went in today.

Now it hurts much worse than before, im going to the doctor and prob taking a few weeks of training. Sucks cuz i just started 3 months ago and feel like im finally in decent enough shape to really start stringing together techniques without gassing and starting to get a much better feel for grappling.

sigh............

I pulled mine. I was out two weeks. Tylenol or some sort of anti inflammatory will help a ton.
