How often does this happen to you guys? It seems to happen to me quite a bit but I go for 2 and a half hours. At the end we do five rounds of rolling at five minutes a piece with 30 second intervals in between.

I have only been going for a month though I have trained in Shotokan Karate for 5 years. The physical aspect of BJJ though has proven to make my stomach swirl usually after the 4th round of rolling. The 5th has had me puking at the last two lessons. It doesn't happen every time but I am nervous of puking on competition or having to tap out to an upset stomach :P

I never eat within 2 hours before a class so the water pukes are a bit more pleasant to deal with. How long do you think it will take at three classes a week before my stomach can handle the heavy cardio workout that is rolling.

Also does anyone else have this problem and if so how long did it take you to be able to fight off the bad stomach?

sounds normal until you get your conditioning in order

once your body gets used to the strain it'll stop

Puking never indicates that you're doing something right in practice.

You're either working your body to an unhealthy degree in that session, or you're taking some kind of punishment to the stomach area that you aren't equipped to handle.

you need to work on conditioning

weve all puked when weve worked too hard, but if you hit that limit after 4 or 5 rounds of rolling, you need to work on your cardio.

Simply reading that from someone has made me feel better about it. Thank you. And I try not to "spaz out." I noticed I started to feel a little swirly when the big guy had me in mount and put all his weight on my stomach.

I just got over an enlarged spleen and I feel I may make another visit to the doctor soon. He cleared me to start training again but still just to be safe.

you've only been training a month and are already training for that long?

You havent prepped your body to take that much punishment.

when i 1st started i used to heave-ho during class, running to the bathroom almost blowing chunks .

Since training more and more that feeling went away , and i have never felt that ever again . It's been 6 years since i have started training

I've never thrown up from hard training before. Almost, but never. I feel that I'm failing in my BJJ somehow. Missing out on this experience that everyone else seems to have. @_@

Last night was my first night back after 3 weeks off. I decided to start with the advanced class (oh what a mistake) and we did 5 rounds.. I felt faint and wanted to blow chunks....but my coconut water washed it all back down and I was fine after about 20 mins sitting on the bench after class...

ive never had that problem. youre not eating too much in advance of training are you?

Are you drinking gatorade or some other sports drink before practice?

You need to drink more water. Not right before class, but all throughout the day before it, and more on the days you're not training.

Your body is freaking out and it has no idea what is causing it distress, so it has the only reaction that makes sense... get rid of the poison and puke your guts out.

Give it the fluids it needs, it will be less distressed.

i made some guy puke when we were about 10 minutes in exhausted. I went for the RNC and squeezed with my last but of strength.

he puked his pre-workout drink

I once ate a big bowl of Helmen's Chilibeans and cheese about 2 hours before practice. Made it all the way through 2 hours of BJJ, and when I was done, it was puke city, population me. Most I can eat 90mins before BJJ is a piece of PB on a slice of toast. Anymore, and I am hurling. But my older brother can eat a full meal 30mins prior and be completely fine @_@

I've never puked from training. No puking during soccer, weight training, nor bjj. I've even eaten two bowls at hu hot (a stir fry type restaurant) an hour prior to class and didn't throw up. Mighty uncomfortable, though.

Just know your body's limit. You don't have to push yourself to the barf point every time. Stay hydrated, do some running outside of class, conserve energy inside of class.

I stay hydrated during the day, and plan my meals 3-4 hours before training. That way everything is already worked its way down.

Thank you for the replies everyone. It is encouraging to see that this happens to most people at some point.

Based on what you have said I need to stay hydrated and just know my limits. I pin pointed it to around the tail end of the 4th round is where I start to feel sick. Perhaps I will go 3 solid rounds and then call it for now and slowly build from there.

I know understand that it is NOT GOOD to push yourself to the puking point where as before I felt I was just training hard and it was ALMOST a point of pride for me. Though it is a gross feeling.

Sounds like:

A) You're drinking too much water right before or during training. Drink water throughout the day to get yourself properly hydrated. If you must drink during training stick to a simple rule: sip, don't chug.

B) You might just be out of shape and overdoing it. Happens to a lot of new folks, you can go further mentally right now than your body can keep up with. Your body will catch up, but consider taking a slight edge off to avoid the technicolor yawn.

C) This is related to B, because it's extremely common for newbies. A lot of people, even some wrestlers, have a bad habit of holding their breath. Since newcomers tend to strain & spazz, not only do they burn a ton of energy...they do it while simultaneously depriving themselves of oxygen. Make sure you're exhaling regularly, through the mouth. Inhale through the nose. This alone will make it a lot easier to endure a long training session.
