Fuck you guys I'm no boxing expert! Now that we have that out of the way I probably have a dumb question.

Yesterday I was hitting my Bros heavy bag for fun. Not going too hard as he didn't have his bag gloves with him, but just having some fun with it. I did a teep followed by a spinning back fist. The back fist really hurt and now the back of my hand is pretty bruised lol.

My question is... are you supposed to bend your wrist back as to connect more with the knuckles or leave it more flat? Again I realize it's probably a silly question, but I'm not experienced and figure i had to of done it wrong

Really? I mean generally punching somebody in the head hurts, but shit that hurt, on a freakin bag no less. I couldn't imagine using that technique in real life now, unless I came around with a hammer fist instead

I know someone who did kickboxing and they told him it's even better to land it like a hammerfist with the side of the glove than with the back of the hand especially since there is almost no padding on the side of the glove.
Not sure if it's legal in MT to hit with the side of the glove but apparently refs often don't penalize for it because it wasn't a small gym and they told it the guys there.
In self defence it obviously makes more sense or in MMA land with the side of the hand like a hammerfist not with the back of the hand it's nearly impossible to hurt your hand that way

never hammer fisted anybody in the head repeatedly? it still hurts

Hammer fist style, apparently you could break your elbow easier if you do it the other way.

Do it like Jon Jones spinning elbow, where you duck a little and have it come from a diagonal angle, never spinning through and over committing with your feets

Never someone in the head when I did TKD I did it on walls and wood stuff things whatever it's called trying to figure out which is better but it hurts A LOT less.
It's about the safest way of hitting someone or something even safer than with the palm.
With a palm strike it still hurts the wrist but hammerfist style you can and should clench your fist as hard as you should which not only protects the bones in your hand very well (and the more grip strength you have the better and grip strength is very trainable) but it also protects your wrist a little bit.
it's by FAR the safest way of hitting anything with your hand. Apes also punch that way it is the most natural way for humans and apes to hit things since it's pretty safe

You hurt the back of your hand hitting a heavy bag with a spinning backfist? Did you hit one of the sandbags, or are you just that prone to injury?

As far as the spinning backfist, itself, with gloves on you'll typically land it with the flat of the back of the hand, since that's where the padding is, and it's the easiest way to do it. Without gloves, you typically snap backfists and whip the knuckles into the target--it's not meant to be a power strike, but more of a distracting one. I really prefer spinning hammerfists over backfists if I'm not wearing gloves.

I stated in the op that I was not wearing gloves. I can't say from certain if im prone to injury as I only trained striking art at a young age and most likely it was a McDojo lol. I did play (american) football for 8 years without any kind of injury other then a groin pull. I played the line, fullback, and linebacker most. Very collision friendly positions.

I guess if for whatever reason I decide to use it in a real situation I'll use the backfist variant.

So you're saying without gloves you bend your wrist to hit with the knuckles? That's what I assumed. That or a hammerfist. Shit would really fuck your hand up landing flat

I saw that you weren't wearing gloves--I was just covering your options. Even hitting with the flat back of your fist without gloves, though, you shouldn't have injured your hand on the bag unless you hit a sandbag weight. The spin really puts too much momentum behind it for a backfist to be a really good option, in any case, so a spinning hammerfist is better. Without the spin, backfists are great as snappy strikes to set up something with more power.

Don't hit a heavy bag without gloves.
I'd rather a spinning backfist to collect the opponents nose or end of the jaw rather than the side of the face. There will be less resistance against the hand.

Sounds more like just plain lack of conditioning on the hand. There ie very little padding on the back of the hand so it is going to be way more sensitive than either the hammer or forefist both of which are more durable to impact by default.
