Been training almost a year and I think I'm progressing. But the other day, I was choked out with my gi when the guy was in my guard. He just grabbed my colar and pushed it across my neck and pushed all his weight from his straight arm. This happened with 2 other people before.

Also another time I was rolling with this huge dude. Probably 290 and I'm 210. Again he was in my guard, he laid down on me and smothered me with his chest and started to go for an equizel. I got caught..

Why the hell am i getting choked out in guard. I try to bump my hips and angle off and go for my subs and sweeps...but I still get caught. I thought guard supposed to be a safe place, for me it seems like it's a danger zone...

Hip out and armbar the bejezus out of them as soon as they start pushing on the lapel. They're basically handing you a giftwrapped sub, though the choke can work if you don't know what to do or are slow about it.

Don't EVER let anyone put two hands behind your head from your guard, at least in the gi. I learned this one the hard way and got put to sleep via Ezekiel at Pan Am's a couple years ago.

First, guard is not a safe place. It's a safer place. People can submit you in your own guard. It's low percentage, but it's not unheard of or impossible.

The best way to avoid it is to stop thinking of your guard as a safe place. It's not somewhere that you can afford to be passive. A safe guard is a highly active guard that is attacking constantly.

ouch....at the pan am's....did u have time to tap? or was just being stubborn?

"The guard is the best of the worst positions"

If you have been training for a year you should be sure your progressing, not just think you are.

Do you train consistently?

It was a white belt match so neither of us was any good, but he managed to get the choke absolutely perfectly aligned on the carotids without touching my windpipe. I made the mistake of waffling between which defense I was going to do and wasted a little time. I felt ok but was out cold inside of 4 seconds.

Funny story on that one:

I wasn't unconscious for more than 15 seconds, but had an incredibly vivid dream that I had been vacationing for weeks on a cruise ship. Lounging on the pool, drinks, visits to Caribbean islands, the whole nine yards. As I started to come back to reality I still have no idea WTF is really going on. I open my eyes and see the ref elevating my feet and a few other people standing over me.

The first words out of my mouth were, "Hey guys, what are you all doing on my boat??"

That got a blank stare followed by a good chuckle. :icon_lol:

Nice dream bro! LoL.

I got caught in a crappy americana from someone while they were in my guard. I asked my instructor about it and he said be sure to stay aware and swim in their arms, grip fight, and keep their posture broken.

I get this a lot from people that are bigger dudes, they go for ezekials and such from in my guard. I did see someone at a tournament ( white belt level ) get choked unconscious by that straight arm lapel choke when they had someone in their guard. I watched the guy try it in his second match and he got caught in an arm bar.

i either go for an armbar there or try to push his arm all the way across my throat into the arm triangle postion and either try to finish there or take the back.

I used to have the same problem til i constantly drilled the situation with a partner, now i invite ppl to try subs from inside my guard, infact it happened today and i got my 1st ever armbar to triangle choke transition ;)

Just open your guard and put your feet on the hips and push away while shoulder walking back, if you feel it's at the point where he could finish it. In most situations you should be able to threaten with an armbar. But a lot of times the reason this happens is because they keep their guard closed and stay in place.

This! I kept getting stuck like you until I realized the armbar was there. Let's just say people don't try and pull that crap on me anymore...LOL! I learned my lesson.

Kata-juji-jime (mixed grip cross choke) and sode-gumura-jime (ezekiel), both work technically from inside the guard, and you cant counter with an armbar.

The best way to avoid is having a good guard, if they are busy defending submissions and sweeps they cant try those hail marys.

Agreed.
The best way to defend a choke, is by preventing your opponent from getting good grips. If you stay entirely on the defensive, he will eventually find an opening. By attacking, you force him to defend, making it much harder for him to find that opening (of course, if you just attack recklessly, you're gifting him the oportunity).
It's just like the stand-up: if you allow him to get good grips, get ready for take-off. If you allow him to get good grips in your guard, you have to get ready for him to pass or even a choke.
Grip fighting ftw.
That's why you see so few blackbelts allowing their opponents to get good grips or a grip at all.

was this a white belt masters lightweight fight by chance?

I think that may have been a buddy of mine. He won his first two matches by ezekiel (put one person to sleep) and then lost his final match from an arm bar (got greedy and went for a 3rd ezekiel lol).

2010? It was probably me. Give him a nod for me, he seemed like a good guy. He was quite apologetic about putting me out. Did me a favor, really, I'll *never* get caught by that again. :icon_chee

That's the bread smasher for you 8)
Both are supposed to be gift armbars, but it is easier said than done, right?
