No one's talking about it but Bellingham has been crap the entire tournament.

You know who would have been a perfect replacement for him?

Southgate out
He would make no difference from the bench.

Him and Foden have been terrible. Kane, Bellingham, and Foden are all taking up the same space. Palmer and Gordon need to start.

Maddison should have gone over Mainoo
Weirdly ehough, Bellingham at Real is allowed to roam outwide to make 2vs1 with Vini or Rodrygo leading to great chances or make runs into penaltybox, during Real vs Bayern CL Kane also dropped down few times. Foden poty at City. Almost like Southgate is unable to just copy what Carlo, Pep or Tuchel were doing with same players.

Now England is facing either Netherlands or 3rd placed team from group E (Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine all tied with 3 points).
Slovakia-Romania and Belgium-Ukraine early games today.

Mainoo clearly a better option than Trent and Gallagher.

Gallagher was shocking last night so not hard to look better than him. Trent isn't a CM.

Mainoo was getting pushed off the ball easily against Serbia when he came on. He's better on the ball than Gallagher and the way Slovenia played suited him but against a decent side, Southgate will start Gallagher for his physicality and ball winning.

Wharton is the one who should be starting next to Rice but that won't happen. He's strong, good on the ball and a good ball winner.

It's shocking from Southgate; he's just trying to force Foden and Bellingham into the team somehow and when Kane is dropping off, they are all standing in the same position. If Palmer and Gordon started then Bellingham would have more room to make those runs he does for Madrid.

State of this:

Average positions against Slovenia

They're all just getting in each other's way, and nobody is running in behind.

Or put Bellingham in nr 8 role idk. While no prime Kroos/Xavi he did make his fair share of runs to help out defense and retrieve the ball when playing for Real. That would allow Foden to be in middle and Gordon outwide.
More of a box to box midfielder rather than classic CM. Maybe it wont work but not like current tactics are working well. Outside of first 30 minutes against Serbia its been pretty bad. Idk maybe Southgate checked out already?

It would be a better option than what he is trying to do at the moment. Having Bellingham as the B2B and Foden as the 10 would make them more attacking and probably suit the team better.

I doubt Southgate will experiment now though, he's not one to take any risks and will probably stick with what he has been doing.

England vs Netherlands would be interesting game.
