Do you think there is politics in BJJ belt promotions, both in getting lower belts and and the black belt?

Sure, though less than most martial arts. For whatever reason (youth of the art, most likely, along with competition) BJJ belts are usually a pretty accurate representation of a person's skill level.

completely yes. not all associations but my last one was bad for it.

I remember the story of this white belt that train at another gym.

He was pretty good for a white belt and won a couple of competitions.

He was one of the few successful guys at his gym and one of the few that competed.

But for some reasons, they will not promote to blue belt. They kept saying that he needed to stay white belt longer.

Total sand bag. I understand they delayed promotion because many of them did not compete. But delaying the promotion of a succesful competitor is shameful.

one of the assistant instructor even told him that he did not have a guard game and that is why he missed out.

That was the funniest bs I ever heard. To start with, his gym is notorious for being top fighters and they do not care much about guard.

So well anyway, he left them and enter the next comp as a blue belt.

His first match was against a blue belt from his old gym. He submitted the guy with ezekiel in "his" own closed guard.

He went on to win silver medal.

Not bad for somebody which instructorts did NOT want to promote for whatever reasons.

LOL.

not if your part of a professional mma team/gym, which is where I train

what ever belt your given you absolutely deserve, they have credibility they wanna keep for the high ranked belts

I would say this usually correct as a student . At times persons have affiliated with well known names and then skyrocketed up the belt chain. Your general point is correct though. If your working hard in a well known gym/affiliation (e.g. CTA, Sylvio Behring, etc) then your rank is earned not bought.

Yes. Just like there's politics in Corporate America. The best people don't always get promoted.

Nope, no such thing.

But man, i must suck at bjj to have been a brown belt for the past 4.5 years !

Dont worry, i am ok with it.

Really wanted the skills of a black belt. The actual rank is not required to enjoy myself.

Chose your academy, then train jiu jitsu.

Why haven't you come back to train again, BRO?!?!

Hi Ijustwannasurf, your teaching style is great and you are a great tacher and your students are super nice. I just felt bad about being a strapped for cash student and I knew I would not be able to afford. I hope we are still friends.

Did uchmata get his brown? He was very good at jiu jitsu
