Joss Whedon Says No to Rumored PLANET HULK Movie

Joss-Whedon-Planet-Hulk-Dragonlord.jpg

Last month, it was rumored that The Avengers 2 would involve the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) being deemed too dangerous to live on Earth and he would get shipped into outer space. From there, Hulk would get a solo Phase 3 movie based off Greg Pak‘s comic book arc Planet Hulk. In the comic, Hulk becomes enslaved on the planet Sakaar, is forced to participate in gladiatorial games and eventually becomes a hero of the rebellion against the Red King. Then the rumor continued that The Avengers 3 would have Hulk and his subjects returning to Earth and wreaking havoc, which would be based on Pak’s World War Hulk storyline.

At some point, it’s difficult to tell how carefully Marvel Studios has mapped out their movies and at what point it’s just fanboy dreaming masquerading as a serious possibility for future films. Since Joss Whedon is one of the Marvel Movie Universe overseers now, IGN asked him about the Planet Hulk rumor. Whedon replied, “Well I’m really not supposed to comment, but no, that’s nonsense.”

Latino Review Insists PLANET HULK/WORLD WAR HULK Will Happen

World-War-Hulk-Variant-Dragonlord.jpg

A few days ago, AICN reportedly debunked the rumors that Marvel is planning a Planet Hulk and World War Hulk adaptation for Phase 3. The site explained that actor Mark Ruffalo signed a 6-picture deal with the studio, which makes his appearance unlikely since Bruce Banner is not in the Planet Hulk storyline. Today, Latino Review is sticking to their guns that Planet Hulk will happen and gives an explanation:

"Where is the rule that says when a movie adapts a comic book it has to verbatim? Mark Ruffalo’s role in a Planet Hulk movie wouldn’t be reduced. There are huge chunks of that story where Hulk can revert back to Banner. Simple fix. Think dialogue scenes when he is not in the arena. Remember, The Avengers in the 3rd act set up that Banner now has control over his transformations. That is key.

Yes, Ruffalo signed a six picture deal but think about it fanboy nation, you really believe we are going to see Ruffalo in only two other Avengers sequels? Does that make sense? If Marvel only wanted him for just Avengers sequels, Ruffalo’s team at UTA would have negotiated for only three pictures. Like I said before, how many times are we going to see Hulk smash puny humans and be on the run from General Ross, ESPECIALLY now that he is part of the Avenger initiative? Audiences absolutely loved when Hulk smashed puny aliens last summer. Some food for thought."

Marvel's Planned PLANET HULK Movie Debunked?

Planet-Hulk-0227-Dragonlord.jpg

A while ago, El Mayimbe from Latino Review posted a Marvel scoop that got everyone either really excited or really damn angry. The word was that a Planet Hulk solo movie was planned, leading into a World War Hulk type scenario with the Marvel Cinematic Universe equivalent of The Illuminati for Avengers 3. Latino Review has been on point more often that not with these type of scoops, so despite the events being predicted being a long way away, fans went along with it. But today, Mr. Beaks from AICN is debunking the hell out of the Planet Hulk story. His sources reckon this is "1,000% inaccurate".

"According to my source, this just isn't happening - not as long as Marvel's got Mark Ruffalo committed to a six-picture deal as Bruce Banner. And that's the primary issue with PLANET HULK: Banner isn't in it at all (unless you count the WHAT IF... story where Banner is immediately killed upon reaching Sakaar). To make sure, I went to a another source for confirmation, and they backed up every detail. PLANET HULK isn't happening."

Mr. Beaks says he couldn't get any details on what the plans ARE post Avengers 2, but that Ruffalo's Banner would be an "integral part of that film". This is hardly surprising given the overwhelmingly positive response from both fans and critics alike to his performance in The Avengers. At the end of the day, it's just one guy's sources over another, and both are pretty reliable. Plus, this stuff is years away, who knows what could happen?

PLANET HULK and WORLD WAR HULK Planned for Marvel's Phase 3

World-War-Hulk-0203c-Dragonlord.jpg

After four ambiguous clues and days of waiting, Latino Review's El Mayimbe has finally unveiled his big Marvel Super Bowl scoop and it's a pretty big one. According to Mayimbe, Marvel is planning another Hulk solo movie for Phase 3 and they're adapting the Planet Hulk and World War Hulk comic book storylines. A second Hulk movie murmurs started surfacing after the Jade Giant stole the show in The Avengers. Last April, Marvel's President of Consumer Products told Forbes hinted the possibility of a Hulk movie due to the overwhelming positive reaction of the character in The Avengers. And last September, Marvel Studio's President Kevin Feige revealed that there would be no Hulk movie until after The Avengers 2 and that Planet Hulk and World War Hulk stories are a possibility.

For those unfamiliar with the comic, Planet Hulk tells the story of the Hulk, after being exiled by the Illuminati (Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Namor, Professor X, Black Bolt, and Doctor Strange), crash landing on the distant planet Sakaar, ruled by the tyrannical Red King. Sold into slavery, Hulk becomes the planet’s mightiest gladiator and eventually it's new king. In World War Hulk, the Hulk returns to Earth for revenge with his allies the Warbound.

Per Mayimbe, the plan is for the Hulk to be shipped off to space by the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the Illuminati either during the 3rd act or in the post credits for The Avengers 2 due to the Green Goliath being out of control. This will lead to a Hulk standalone movie based on Planet Hulk. The Hulk will eventually return to Earth in The Avengers 3 in a story based on World War Hulk.

When Mark Ruffalo replaced Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, he signed a 6-picture deal with Marvel. So it's entirely plausible that part of the arrangement is for Ruffalo to star in his own franchise movie and not just appear as a supporting character or show up in cameos/post credits.

There's a few obstacles this project will face, like the fact that some of the key characters in the story like Mister Fantastic, Professor X and the Silver Surfer are tied up with 20th Century Fox. The other problem is some of the essential characters like the Sentry don't exist yet. But I believe a simple character swap would fix this dilemma. So instead of the Illuminati, it will be the Avengers who will exile Hulk. In the comics, it is the Silver Surfer who faces the Hulk in Planet Hulk while Beta Ray Bill substituted for the Surfer in the animated movie. Silver Surfer belongs to Fox, so that's a no-no and there are no plans for Beta Ray Bill to be introduced in Thor: The Dark World. I'm going out on a limb and predict that Kurse (played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) from the Thor sequel might play the Surfer role. As for the Sentry, I think Thor will be an even better fit for the story.

So there you have it. This is huge for Hulk and Marvel fans alike. Latino Review has proven itself to have a great track record in dishing out comic book movie scoops. It's astonishing how Marvel Studios is already looking far ahead and planning for Phase 3 while equally disappointing to see Warner Bros. can't even get their act together for their DC Comics properties.

Ang Lee Regrets Not Making His HULK Movie More Fun

Ang-Lee-Hulk-Dragonlord-1.jpg

The 2003 Hulk film is widely considered a disappointment. Many fans were put off by the psychodrama, as well as the mutated Hulk dogs and Hulk himself growing absurdly taller and bigger after each transformation certainly did. While doing press for his new movie, Life of Pi, director Ang Lee told Vulture that 2003's Hulk gave him useful experience with computer-generated images that he was able to apply to his latest film.

"I learned quite a bit about CG from The Hulk, and I wouldn't have been able to do Life of Pi without that. But it's easier to create an animal, because there exists a good reference — so a tiger or a hyena is easier than a 2,000-pound rage monster. The hardest thing to do is the weight, not the skin, because there's no reference for something that size that is agile. And the technology's improved, so you can have more details with Mark's Hulk. My problem is that I took the whole thing too seriously. I should have had more fun with it, instead of all the psychodrama! [Laughs.]"
