Petr Yan

Merab was a terrible matchup for him tbf sir.
Against O'Malley it was a bad judging call in my eyes, but it was close after watching it again.

I think he needs real work on his grappling, because it doesn't seem as solid as we all thought.
So maybe you're right, and a new grappling coach might be in order.

Yan is great at fighting but not at scoring points with the current ruleset.

He takes too many “breaks” during fights and tends to fight with a very low output. While he is reading his opponents and defending successfully, judges see that as him being behind. Unfortunately, he doesn’t follow that up with volume of his own.

I believe he was robbed against both Sterling and O’Malley.

he needs to improve his defensive grappling, and have a better strategy tailored to impress our dumb judges.

I'm of the opinion that Yan v Sterling 2 was a draw and that he shoulda got the decision against O'Malley. He straight lost that decision to Merab by the current ruleset, but it isn't like he got his ass beat.

He just needs to get off first and keep the initiative. Honestly, a step down in competition for a fight or two would probably really help too.

Aljo and O'Malley are slippery and they barely got away with a decision. Yan is not overrated at all, unless you had silly expectations to begin with.

He's definitely getting a step down in his next one, as he has just fought the current challenger, the champ and the clear number two guy.

I thought he had great cardio but he was tired a lot earlier against Merab than usual. He needs to work on footwork now that opponents won't give him the looks he wants as much

I agree, but knowing UFC, they'll keep giving him tough match-ups instead of a sensible rebound fight.

That single illegal knee fucked his career. The BW would look so different right now if that never happened, that's some crazy butterfly effect shit if I've ever seen it.

His style is awesome, but it has its flaws. He cant fight from a deficit. He needs to have a dominant early half or he cant make up the difference at the elite level.

Close losses.

Ain't no reason yet to bet against that legit russian savage. Dude can fight, and is now quite motivated.

holy shit, there are some delusional posters in this thread.

I too thought he would be dominant as champ. I’m wondering if it is division leveling up rather than him regressing. He still looks sharp and doesn’t look like he’s lost a step. Bantam weight really is one of the most stacked divisions now.

Close losses that he probably could have won with more aggression and not waiting till the 2nd round to get going.

He has the face of a bass and the mind of a raccoon but he’s a great talent

I think fans give him a break they don't normally afford other fighters. I see PLENTY of 'doggers saying that fighters who coast in the final round deserve to lose, but totally forgive Yan for doing the exact same thing, but in round 1 of every fight.

He knows the number of rounds, so it's not like they're trying to get by on a technicality and he isn't. Sure, he's VERY good at using those rounds to analyze his opponents, but he's got to know either how to still win those rounds, or he has to be that much consistently better in the rounds he's trying in so he doesn't drop any of those as well

Yan has to compete against these super high level grapplers while a guy like Adesanya can just fight nothing but strikers for years. He has a tough career.
