Anyone notice a recent trend of people wrapping your jacket around your back and just holding you on top position? I had mount last night and a guy just wrapped my gi and held on to me, he made a couple of attempts to roll me off to no avail. It stopped me from advancing to a higher mount or working for a submission, but it was just pointless. I figure that in a sportive context it's straight up losing on points and in a real life context I'd just stick a thumb in your eye. Sooo . . . why do it?

Not a big fan of those tactics. Stalling until he makes a mistake on top

For bottom mount you need to work on knee elbow escapes or kipping escapes IMO. Try to get back to half guard or single leg X

Same thing with people just getting their elbows to their ribs and crossing hands. It kind of works for super strong guys, but nothing is happening from there

Yeah, that's what I got from it. They're waiting for me to compromise my base and then capitalise on that. The onus is on them to escape though, not for the top player to do anything - I could just sit there for the rest of the round. The player in top mount doesn't have to try to "escape" being pinned on top.

Having an hard time visualizing this. Are you talking about wrapping the lapel up and around the back like they were trying to set up a baseball bat choke but from bottom mount?

Basically, yes. And just using it to hold you on top.

Anti-grappling is always a thing. Running around the guard, Schaubbing someone, holding someone in closed guard for dear life, not doing anything from the bottom, ...

There's no real solution. I roll to have fun and to get stuck in funky novel situations, so fuck the stallers, I don't roll with them.

I wouldn't even call it anti-grappling. It's stalling out under a bad position when down on points. It's just weird, haha.

I dunno...osekomi means making them suffer via gravity. Fucker wants to stall from bottom at practice I'll enjoy the rest time and his next partner will enjoy his gas.

Yes that's even more applicable in BJJ..."ok kid I wanted to work, fuck you, here's nearly 15 years of Judo and wrestling pressure..and theres 2 min left in the roll..you asked for this!!!"

Some people just stall like that. I had some guy who wore these type of gloves and he just death gripped my gi. It just causes a stalemate that doesn't do anything. To be fair if he didn't stall then I would have probably smashed him.

Nope. We’re all too busy trying the kipping escape.

Never seen that in my life. I have had people hold on for dear life around my body.

If people want to do stuff like that in a roll, I just give up the position unless it's a serious training round.
Wouldn't they effectively be putting themselves in the position for something like a "mothers milk" or seriously hard cross face?

i just wait and ask, "ur scared bitch. afraid if you go for a sub, you lose position. we can waste time here all day"

Sometimes ppl just have a death grip on side control that they want ya to waste energy. I just know if they have to move for a sub at some point, or im safe just sitting there(sub only ruleset)

There is time and place for that tactic, but if thats their game, its pretty sad.

Tf, just Ezekiel or mothers milk them like other posters have said. Idk maybe grapevine and start humping him pretending like you’re trying to get out of the position. I don’t think that’s a trend, it’s just one guy being an idiot and another who can’t capitalize on it

I'll triple up on the give them what they want sentiment. Sometimes the path to a sub from Mount is pressure. Spread your arms out like you parachuting, grape vine or prayer feet right behind their butt and just plant your chest on their face. If they're holding you down they aren't framing and they aren't escaping, so make them want out. Just be ready and willing to grab an arm or elbow if they eventually try something desperate.

So if they have their GI wrapped around you can't you just Ezekiel choke them?
It was wrapped tight around the shoulder and pulled in super tight. I could probably have just done a knuckle choke easily enough, but what perplexes me really is why anyone would do this "defence" at all. I'm not asking advice on what to do, just wondering "why?" and if anyone has experienced this before.

I'm not sure why anyone do it. My best guess is maybe they were tired and didn't want to sit out so they just stalled the whole time to rest. I've never experienced it before.
