I've heard of it at the drive through with Starbucks when the person in front of you pays for your coffee.

Went out for lunch yesterday, there was a woman who I didn't recognise stood by the entrance for some time, during a conversation with the owner guy he told us she paid for $20 of our meal. She didn't eat, just came in, stood there for a while, asked to use the rest room and then comped us $20 for our meal.

Is this normal? I've lived in the US for 11 years but not heard of that before. I've been doing some local things so wondered if she recognised me and it was down to that like a community thing but didn't recognise her at all. The people I do the local things with I've got to know pretty well.

We obviously paid it forward to the next person who ate there.

Yeah it happened to me in the drive thru before. The person ahead of me paid and I didn't find out until I pulled forward and they had already driven away.

I paid it forward a few days later for someone else.

Pro tip: always ask how much their tab is before agreeing to pay it. You don't want to wind up paying for some gigantic order that they were buying for a work meeting with the company credit card.

Mildly had a convo with owner guy about putting the $20 into the thing where people pay extra on their bill which goes towards a homeless person being able to walk into somewhere and get a free sandwich. But I think they're struggling at the moment as it is without being known for waifs and strays coming in and them having to refuse them something to eat.

I did it once at Tim Hortons, except the cashier girl out of nowhere asked me if I wanted to pay for the car behind me. She was hot so I did it. Now I think about it, it was probably her boyfriend or something in the other car. Never saw her again

I don't do anything like that but I do try to help people having a shitty time, people have helped me like this. So it's sort of paying it forward.

I only help downtrodden people, ambulant vendors that walk inside my poker club selling fruit cups, little girls selling candy, variously aged females hawking baked goods, windshield wiping services, etc..

I buy their stuff even though I don’t really want it most of the time, sometimes I just give them the money and tell them to keep it or I gift the product to someone else.

I don’t go to drive-thrus anyways and wouldn’t want to encourage the behaviour on the rare occasion that I do.

I do a BK drive through after a physically tough day I think twice this year while keeping in mind I'll buy some food from a local vendor the day after to even it out.

Thank God it has never happened to me. It sets up a system where people are guilted into paying, not because of the goodness of their heart, but because they feel socially pressured, lest they be labeled an asshole. Or someone takes advantage of it and buys as much as they can.

Fuck all that. I'm stopping all that fake altruism nonsense if this ever happened to me. I'll take the money I would have spent and bet a ridiculous parlay or use it on BangBros or "donate" half of it to Sofie Rain and the other half to Bonnie Blue.

How does a woman walking into a restaurant, not eating anything and anonymously pay $20 for someone's food and walking out wanting no recognition have anything to do with social pressure?

I was told once a lady paid for my soda ( $1.99 ) and if I wanted to pay it forward and pay for another family's entire meal...

Never really done it, but if I'm out with friends and they forget wallet in the car, I will save them the trip and just pay

Has only happened a few times tho

happened to me once. I got up to the drive through window where I was supposed to pay, and they told me the person in front of me paid for my meal. They were still at the next window in front of me, getting their food. I gave them a wave out the window to say thanks. Then I got my food and left. It was a nice experience.

You're welcome man, it was nice seeing you.

I had someone pay for my fuel once... I found it positively mystifying why someone would do that.

It was like $100 too.
