One of my favorite things about this sport is finding lesser known fighters with potential and learning more about them.

I've seen a few Marcin Held fights. He is a polish, LW fighter. He seems to have potential. He is 19 - 3 over all and he is 8 - 2 in Bellator losing only to Michael Chandler and Dave Jansen. in Bellator, 6 of his 8 wins have come by stoppage.

Notable wins in his career:

Phillipe Nover
Rich Clementi

Anyone a fan? Anyone know any interesting tid bits about him? Anyone have any predictions? Anyone particularly not like him?

He's not that obscure. Great BJJ, fun to watch, likes to go for leg locks. Is he still with Bellator?

i like the guy, good record, still young and still improving. Don't fancy his chances against Pitbull though i will be supporting him. Always seemed pretty small for 155.
came so close to submitting Michael Chandler years ago

Would love to see a rematch between Held and Chandler. Both have improved greatly.

He looks like John Pollock of the Fight Network.

Gets better all the time. His striking has looked pretty damn serviceable lately too.

A lot of people are familiar with him through his Bellator fights.

Gotta love a leglock specialist.

Yes, well I'm posting on Sherdog in the Worldwide MMA Discussion, so "obscure" may be the wrong word. I suppose what I meant to say is, "A fighter that I'm certain 95% of UFC fans who don't post on Sherdog don't know."

How is he obscure? He's been on the televised portion of Bellator several times and is often in exciting fights. The way he finished Clementi was impressive, even if it was at the end of his career.

99% of ufc fans who dont post on sherdog don't know more than 15% of ufc roster.

True. I suppose if that was the audience I was targeting, I could have made my thread:

Obscure Fighter of the Week: Junior Dos Santos.

Or

Obscure fighter of the week: Anyone lighter than 205lbs.

If you consider Marcin Held an obscure fighter you're probably not a fan of MMA. The guy has already fought in Bellator 10 times, was a part of multiple tournaments, and has a #1 contender fight lined up.

Bellator is the big show. If you aren't following it, you aren't following MMA.

You caught me. I've been posting on Sherdog since 2002 nearly daily, but I don't actually watch MMA. Will someone please explain who Tito Ortiz is to me already.

Actually, you've identified the #1 problem with Sherdog. People who post here more than they actually watch fights, and inevitably bitch about the watered down cards because they haven't heard of half the fighters.

Also, half of these people love it when the UFC features washed out veterans they have heard of over actual contenders.

It's like you have followed me with a camera crew and documented me for years! Some how missing that I watch nearly every UFC, tape and watch every UFC prelim, I do watch Every Bellator, Every WSOF, I watch some of the Legend and RFA cards. I sat front row at several of the Strikeforce Cards and had VIP box seats at the last UFC card in San Jose. I've trained in martial arts for more than a decade and competed in boxing and BJJ. Soooooo, I would consider myself a pretty legit MMA fan. Sorry that I referred to a decent fighter in Bellator as "Obscure" but as you identified, many people on Sherdog don't watch MMA very consistently, so I must be talking to an audience who just may consider Marcin Held, obscure.

It's odd that you'd call Held obscure on this forum when he's been in a few tourneys and is about to fight for the championship of one. But I'm not going to dick measure with you on who is a bigger fan, because at the end of the day, who cares. I just think it's invalid to classify Held as an obscure fighter on wwmma. I'd guesstimate that 90+% of people here have seen him multiple times already.

Anyways, he's a pimp. Rav is right, he did lose to Nover. But since has dramatically improved as most fighters who were 20 years old or so do. The biggest improvement that has been made is in the striking. He's got very tricky footwork and he throws from all angles. I don't think he has even decent natural power or athleticism, but his unpredictability seems to make up for that. It's the one you don't see that hurts you.

His bjj is super creative and world class. He only needs to improve on his wrestling some, as well as his striking defense. I have little doubt he'll do so given his i.q. and the fact he's now training at Roufusport. He's already a good lw for any organization I think, and I think in his prime, which he's still pretty far from, he'll be a contender. I think champion is an overly lofty goal due to his lack of physical gifts, but I suppose anything can happen.

I appreciate that, and my comments about what is wrong with Sherdog has nothing to do with you.
