Last week I was rolling with this fairly new guy during class and it was first round so we were going pretty light. From the start he was going harder than our coach told us to and eventually he got my back. He was going for RNC but I had my chin tucked and defended against his hands so he started to get frustrated. Next he gets "a high RNC" and uses gable grip thrusting his forearm against my nose. I was afraid that my nose was going to brake so I tapped. I was just wondering if this is allowed technique in BJJ and/or other grappling competitions and wether or not it's considered douchy?

facelocks are usually not allowed at lower belts, and definitely should not be used to submit someone in class. it's an a**hole move, just to get a tap to feed the ego. but if had used the forearm to "car jack" to raise your chin, to expose your neck and sink the proper RNC, then that would have been IMO a better way to go about it. i'm also assuming that he used a "gable grip" and not a "cable grip"!

Lol, yeah, sorry about the typo. But yes, he was definitely attempting to just make me tap by crushing my nose because he got frustrated pretty soon after he couldn't sink the choke in.

I had a similar experience yesterday in class.

Guy in his second class rolled with me (I'm just whitebelt by the way). He sprawled my takedown, and bearhugged me from dogfight position. I clasped his elbows and sat through, getting myself into a Kasa side control position on him. He brought his knees up and over and grabbed my head with his knees and clamped for all living hell. I felt my skull compressing and tapped. Had a headache for hours afterwards.

Definitely a douche move, but I don't really blame the guy. I'm not sure what refs would do if he did that in a tourney, white belt vs white belt.

Sounds like you guys need more mat time, if your struggling with noobs chances are you are one yourself.

If someone has a a RNC so hih tht it's across your nose you should easily be able to turn your head and push on their elbow to get it up and over your head.

No big deal and in a tournament I doubt a ref would say anything. That being said you should probably remind that guy to try to use proper technique and not try to crush peoples noses during practice.

we have an incredibly strong purple belt who loves to crush face.

he will just slowly apply pressure until you tap. i have seen guys get black eyes, bloody knoses, scrapes and bruising. he says since he doesnt explode into it, you have time to work for an escape...but you have the ability to tap just like to any other sub as well.

i just accept it as part of the game and learn to defend them.

I feel like I have to emphasis that no, not every unpleasant move that makes you tap is a douche move.

I originated in a Carlson Gracie Jr. affiliated gym, and this is way before BJJ became popular. Guys in BJJ now have to grow a pair and realize that it is a tough sport, instead of making excuses that their training partners are douchebags because they tapped you.

Like I said, we were going light and it was kind of unexpected what he did. But yeah, I'm just a white belt with little more than a year of experience so obviously there wasn't that much difference between us sill-wise.

Cable grip is when he hogties you with his belt before he face locks you.

Pretty much what others have said - You see this a lot with newer guys they are desperate to win and do what it takes to get a tap. You did the right thing, stay injury free just tap and keep on training dont think about it to much. Also dont sink to this guys level and start doing it back, try to set an example and only finish people clean.

That's definitely not cool, I have people accidentally dig their forearms into my mouth and cut it, but never my nose. I would have had words with him if I were you.
