No 'pure' MMA classes in NYC?

I visit New York City for extended periods of time several times a year, and I'd love to keep my training going, but I have been unable to find a legit MMA gym that offers dedicated MMA classes.

What I've encountered so far is:
* Cardio kickboxing or kung fu schools trying to market themselves as MMA schools.
* A bunch of places that offer several disciplines (often Muay Thai and BJJ), but no dedicated MMA classes.

Can anyone point me to a good gym? Queens/Brooklyn preferred, but given the apparent abundance I'll settle for most locations.

Thanks.

no thats weird thing u gotta go right outside city to long island mma ect lots of good bjj and kick boxing and some wrestling but no good mma

I've considered it, but it comes down to about 2 hours of travelling time from my location in Queens given that I'm limited to public transportation.

Surely the most populous city in the US must be home to a legit MMA gym.

Go to mendez boxing in nyc and ask for john salgado, he has competed in mma and kickboxing professionally. The gym is mainly boxing but he teaches kickboxing and mma whatever you want basically.

Hes got some pretty good rates. Hell also take you around NYC to other gyms like queens muay thai, one of the renzo gracie gyms and i beliebe law mma, he went took his class to some gym in long island idk which one.

Anyways you probably work in nyc so try to save money and dont go to the strip club and you should be good.

While that does sound cool, I'm not really looking for private sessions. All I want is to find a gym where I can show up for the daily grind.

my friend trains at a place called radical mma because they use to market as for mma but tbh they dont do real mma according to him just doing a kick boxing class and doing no gi grappling

when i open a gym again im going to have a mma class people are scared to do mma classes but you can have a beginner mma class t where you work on techniques for mma not hurting each other if done right which i love and its very fun its sad seems like since 2010 mma gyms died off and bjj took its place and got veyr popular i want mma to come back

i believe this happened due to the way mma classes were taught with 0s tructure just guys banging basically teaching guys how to use the wall is very fun iv noticed

kickboxing
They can get clients?
At least in Europe KB without additions is hard to sell "pure" sports KB as suitable for MMA cos takedown/ clinch rules & KB gloves too & etc other stuff.
If training is really taylored for usage in MMA, then yes, KB is usable.

Is it a money issue? He'll work with you. And try to get a rate in your budget. Trust me i trained with him he is really good trainer not the best fighter. He'll have you in a group setting too. And he'll have you go around ny to different gyms to train and have a sparring session. Im moving out of new jersey on weds so im not going to be able to train with him no more.

Trust me it will be good with him last time i trained with him he let me pay him 100 for each month. Hes got like 20 people he trains only like 7 or 9 of them are fighters the others are just for self defense and getting in shape.

Well that sucks, because Radical would've been on the top of my list of places to try out if this thread turned up nothing. According to their schedule they offer classes in shoot boxing and combat jiu jitsu. I'd have imagined that to be equivalent to classes in MMA standup and the MMA ground game, which would be way better than the other options I've seen. Can you confirm that this is not the case?

I've seen (and participated in) a really good beginners MMA curriculum back home. With good coaching it works just as well as any other full contact sport.

I'm not going to call out specific locations, but if you want to see what I'm talking about just try a simple Google search for 'MMA gyms in New York'. You'd be surprised at the amount of shit that turns up.

Surely they attract clients, combat-styled-fitness is very popular in NYC. While I don't disrespect that, it is misleading for someone who's really looking for MMA classes.

I'm originally from Europe and I've trained at gyms in a couple of European countries that had MMA programs. None of them would try to lure you to their kickboxing gym under the false premise of being an MMA gym. In NYC, some gyms seem to rely on the literal definition of MMA in their marketing: "since we offer a mixed set of martial arts, e.g., kick boxing and tae kwon do, we can call oursevels an MMA gym to attract attention".

That does sound much better than I initially thought. Do you have his contact information?

Not anymore but either go on his IG his ig is johnbensensalgado and contact him on there. Since school startee his kids are probably in school. So he'll be in mendez from 7-12 in the morning and than 5-9 in the evening. So if he doesnt respond on ig try going between those times to mendez, and try to catch him. He does a sparring night every friday night, and sat's he'll try to get some people to spar in the morning in queens, at king muay thai. Thats one of the best reasons i loved being apart of his training team. Its like a whole fight family travelling around. Sat and suns he'll try to get the team to go to upstate new york for grappling and mma training and in long island too.

He is an instructor in nyc that everybody in the country wishes they had by them.

I still got to find a place to train when i move to philly. I feel like im going to have to settle for privates, a lot of people on here tell me its good even if its one day a week. But i like consistency and feel like thats better rather than one day a week with an instructor. But it is what it is. Got to do what you gotta do.

It does sound promising. I'll make sure to reach out once I'm back in the city.

Good luck man, and thanks for the info!

according to him a good porton of the class split due to issues with the main coach ad now train somewhere else and the guy who left was one of the main mma guys so if you are going for mma i dont think its the place to go if i were you id try to go to renzos they do have mma classes but isnt advertised i think

He could try renzos, but they try to work with everybodys budget. But idk what hes looking to do, renzos might not be the place. If he wants mma than maybe renzos. That could help him build a career and will get his grappling boosted. I personally do not like to train bjj in a gym where they try to rip your head off, but its worth a shot for him some people like hard rolling like that.

I actually tried calling the radical mma gym 2 years back they never pick up the phone or call you for a free trial. I think that guy whose the main coach your talking about is a bit of a greedy asshole or a self centered one.

Yeah that is fucked and nothing gives him the right to do that in first place lol. We're not in a shaolin temple. Renzos is mainly good for grappling shit. Its up to him though because both has its pros and cons, renzos has a good striking coach too, but they mainly focus on grappling. If anything if he wants to get his grappling up to ufc level he should go to renzos.
