Nick Diaz in a regular gi jiu jitsu class

I know many of us get to train with stars in bjj and MMA. What are these guys like? Are they exactly how the media portrays them? Well, for Nick Diaz the jiu jitsu guy, his on the mat personna is quite different than the press makes him out to be.

For instance, today Nick Diaz just happened to show up at the regular gi class. A simple, “Hey Bill” with a handshake and I was like, “Cool” I’m glad I decided to show up for the morning class. It is a little surprising given the fact that he is fighting in the upcoming Strikeforce event August 15.

So Nick puts on his gi and gets in the back of the line for guard passing drills. He shakes all the white belts’ hands saying, “Hi, I’m Nick.” He takes it nice and easy with the beginners. He stays just above the level of the blues and purples (including me). He has a good half guard, inverted guard, spider guard battle with one of our black belts.

Then it’s time for open rolling. I quickly walk towards Nick. I don’t want to miss the opportunity to train with him today. We go 8 minutes. He’s analyzing my grips and positioning. He’s making mental notes on how to beat me, but he wants to see how my game has progressed since the last time we trained. Time was up. He complimented me on my game. It means a lot coming from him.

So the regular class is over, but I want to work some judo with one of our judo black belts (white bjj). I start working my grips and set ups and I notice Nick is watching. He’s a real student of the game. So he starts working with us. He shows some variations and counters to the move I was working on. He then goes on to show us how he teaches the local cops to apprehend criminals and other self defense tactics.

Finally, he asks the judo black belt to work with him on take downs and throws. All this is normal except for the fact he is fighting in 2 weeks.

Nick gets a bad rap from time to time. I just thought you guys would like to know what he’s really like.

Great story, but for some reason it says that i cannot access the picture because my account does not have the right privileges.

Doesn't surprise me in the least.

I've always liked Nik Diaz and I'm told he's a nice guy in person. His in ring antics are part of the show. Just like Brock's

That's awesome. Does he have insane cardio? Who runs the classes?

Caio Terra is our head instructor after Cesar. We have another black belt (Matheus) who runs the classes once and a while. I'll even teach a class if needed. We always defer to the black belts who show up.

Nick never gets tired...Insane cardio? Yes.:icon_chee

that's cool. i am a fan of nick's.
i usually hate MMA fighters that talk shit, but for some reason i overlook it with him :)

that's awesome.

Nick is one of my favorite fighters, and one of the reasons i like him so much is that he really does seem like someone who is always learning and pushing himself. His fight with Gomi is probably in my top 3 favorite fights of all time.

great post, thanks bill

nick is one of the most technical and exciting fighters in mma, he and his brother make jiu jitsu look good

Thank you for that story.

I'm relieved to hear Nick is one of the good guys with no ego.

His press conference stuff seems lame, but I've always liked him.

Joe rogan always states that Cesar Gracie clubs mostly train NOGI.

Is it true?

Joe doesn't know. Well, he kinda does...We have had long debates at our club talking about gi vs no gi. Here's the real scoop...

Pleasant Hill, Antioch, Stockton, Lodi, and San Ramon all have structured gi and no gi classes. Dave Terrell (Santa Rosa) and Jake Shields (Berkeley) are pretty much no gi only. Jake's place will eventually get a gi class going. Nathan and Nick "require" their students to train with a gi, but they also do a lot of no gi sparring.

Nathan, especially, relies heavily on his jiu jitsu game in the cage. Nick is a jiu jitsu genius (imho). He likes to box but I like it when the fight goes to the ground for both of them. They believe in gi training.

Joe always says nice things about our fighters. So I'm cool with him. Even though he's a 10th Planet guy. j/k

He just speaks his mind without a care of how anybody perceives him. He gets locked on a stream of consciousness and lets it all hang out. He does not have that communication filter that society thinks it needs.

Although he rambles, if you listen carefully, some of the things he says makes sense. Plus, he's like the Yogi Berra of MMA. There's a thread somewhere with all his quotes. Funny stuff...

Nick Diaz is one of my favourite fighters and MMA personalities.

His rants about organic food and the evil of high-fructose corn syrup on sherdog radio actually led me to investigate nutrition and helped me lose more than 50lbs.

Thanks for the insight into his training!

Nick sounds like a humble guy at heart. He solidified mecasca fan when he smacked Smiths hand away. It was pretty badass.

Wow man that must of been a great experience, It seems like he is a cool down to earth guy. So he is not a big head dick like some of the guys out there.
