Hey guys first time poster and I am in a pickle. I have always liked BJJ and practiced a quarter in my college along with kungfu to get my feet wet. I really loved the bjj and I would like to get into it again. Fast forward 2 years, I met a friend that trained in muay thai and he taught me some stuff. We sparred and he wooped my ass! (200 lb vs 130) but it was damn fun even though shin blocks hurt like a mofo. Anyways I have been reading a bit and found 2 muay thai places that stand out. The yard (LA) and Sityodtong (Pasadena). The yard wants to charge me 100 a month and it sounds like a good deal but for 125 sityodtong offers bjj and muay thai! My main concern right now is striking but sityodtong looks very appealing with the bjj too. So I am wondering which school/gym is better when it comes down to it? Thanks you for your patience guys! :icon_chee

Oh also I am interested in MMA, so if there is a gym that offers everything at a low price and the skills are unparalleled to other gyms than I am all ears. (I know its a very hard request)

I live more around the Covina Area but I visit the temple city, arcadia, rosemead and pasadena all the time.

Well if you're in Pasadena more, I think it would be better for you to go to Sityodtong. They are both great schools. You really cant go wrong with either one.

Also, Sityodtong is a more structured environment where there are classes. Whereas, I believe at The Yard, there arent any classes. You go do your thing on your own time, and they will teach you technique and pads.

Go try a class out and see what you like. See which instructor you work well with.

man I went to the intro class yesterday at sityotong and it was crazy! the workouts are pretty demanding and I never sweated harder in my life! It was crazy fun and I learned some basic moves from the experienced students. Now I will try an intro class at the yard and I will try to keep you guys updated. Any input on these two gyms are appreciated.

how much do the intro classes cost, if any?

1st class is free for both places, the yard said they are gonna charge 100 but you can come anytime and they will train you. sityotong has a more structured class schedule so you gotta hit certain times and they charge 125 bucks but you can only take 3 classes a week.

I'm buddies with Glen Spencer at Sityodtong. He's good peeps and an excellent fighter. If you decide to train there, tell him "Brooks" from VA says "hi".

I have not went yet but i plan to go either next tuesday or thursday. When you mean train "mmaon" tuesday and thursday or do you mean mma on tuesday and thursday? I had a impression that the yard only did muay thai?

Yeah, I forgot to add the space. They haven't had BJJ program for the past 6 months or so, but they do have an mma class as I stated before. It's taught by a brown belt really cool guy. I think they start it at 6 pm or so. I suggest you check out the yard on one of those days, good luck with finding a gym!

I used to go to The Yard, awhile ago...Marc and Lee are great teachers...I learned good, basic techniques from their help...As for Joe, I don't have much to say about him...for some reason, he seemed to dislike me for some reason...which was strange..I don't know wtf the problem was...

Now... I'm thinking about going to Sityodtong...Pasadena is little bit far from my home, but I've heard alot of good things about that school...

Kev, can you please give me little bit of details regarding the type of training they do in their classes?

A little distance away, but I am going to Millenia Mma. They have credible instructors and are organized. Learning Thai

Well I only went for an intro class so I cant say for sure its their set regime. The first thing they made me do was warm up with jump rope for about 5-10mins. Than we got into some high intensity cardio like 50 push ups along with 50 burpees AND 50 knee high jumps while having your hands up at guard. After all this we had to assume muay thai stance and do some stepping to the music and high kicks all without rest. After all this happened we hit the pads, He showed us the vertical elbow with horizontal elbow follow up and a knee. After that we did clinch work and mid level kicks. Its pretty damn intense I tell you and after that we all got around the ring and did situps until he said to stop. Sorry for the bad grammar its late and I am tired as hell. Anyways the thing I liked about it was the experienced students help you out and they are really friendly, but my small niggle is that kru walter spreads his attention to all the class(not that its a bad thing) but you won't get that personal 1 on 1 all the time that the yard is suppose to give (I will be finding that out monday).

By the way for all of you who are reading this Sityotong is having a special from today till the 2nd week of Jan. They said something about the joining two people for the price of one and they throw in gloves or something, the details are a little fuzzy because I got a call early in the morning.

Anyways I will be heading out to the yard for a free lesson Monday and I will tell you my decision on which gym to join around the end of the year.

Thanks alot for the info, Kev...Yes, you do get 1on1 training at The Yard...but its not like having a personal trainer...from my experience...I didn't get too much time with them...unless...you could make it to their early, morning classes...since its not that packed around that time, you will def get more 1on1 time...

Well, its upto what type of training you prefer...either you go on your own pace, or be in a class setting...I prefer classes...doing my own thing most of the time got me bored...
