I just got a large tattoo (wrist to elbow) on Monday the 16th. I train BJJ but i wasnt sure how long i should wait to go back. I don't want to go back too soon and fuck my tattoo up but i really miss training. So how long should i wait? And when i go back should i take special care of it for the first few weeks like wrapping it or wearing long sleeves when i do no-gi? Thanks

You need to look after about a week a tattoo and to smear it with ointment until until it begins to live. Well and a week more after that to try not to give loads of skin. And everything will be as it should be :D:D

I don't have any tattoos but I've seen people get them and be back in training after a couple of days with it wrapped up.

Personally I wouldn't take the chance of fucking it up. Leave it a couple of weeks and go back to training hungrier than ever.

A tattoo is an open wound. A pretty one but still an open wound. Wait until it fully heals. You can mess up the tattoo, wasting a lot of money, and you can also put your health into jeopardy.

Getting a rib piece at the moment, waited 3 days after the outline to go back, and about a week and a half after shading. Honestly depends on how you heal, if you go back to soon you will scab pretty bad and pull the ink out.

Everyone heals different, but I would say dont rush it. Give it at least a couple of weeks. Maybe, a long sleeve rash guard (for both nogi and under your gi) is a good idea until it feels completely healed.

As another poster said, I've seen dudes come back to training with a fresh tat covered up. However, I've always been told by my tattoo artists to never cover it after the initial dressing is removed.

First of all Post pics second I wouldnt rush it. You'll know when to go back. You don't want to fuck up your tat.

Thanks for all the help. Why would i need to post pictures? Would a picture of my tattoo change the answer?

I know guys who rolled a week after getting ink, but I wouldn't. In a high contact sport like BJJ where you'll be rubbing and grabbing, the last thing I want is someone ripping the scabbing of the tattoo while it heals.

I went to Muay Thai about a week after every session of work I got done on my arms, but it was very light contact and I took it slow. Kept it covered with a long sleeve rashguard and washed it and lotioned it up immediately after working out.

I went full force about 3 weeks after in Muay Thai, after most of the peeling was done.

The skin is still tender and new, so I would still be hesitant to go full on sparring and gripping in BJJ, but that's me.

i'm heavily tattooed, and my opinion is that you wait until the scabbing period/shedding period is over. keep in mind that it is an open wound and the closet dirtbags that show up to you gym, like the guy who washes his gi 2 times a month, will be sweating and touching you.

Thanks a lot. This seems like he best answer for a new tatttoo. Iwas thinking that too, that it would be best to wait a while since it is pretty much a wound on my arm. Thanks again.

no problem, man. glad to be of some help

A well done tattoo should last a lifetime, but that's only if you let it heal properly and don't fuck around with it.
Likewise you can ideally train jiu jitsu you're entire life, and taking a few weeks off to make sure your tat is properly healed is a drop in that bucket.

i've had tattoos up and down my right arm and waited various times to go back to rolling.
3 days isn't enough.
5 days depending on the work might be enough.
a week or more and you should be fine. i never had any problems when i waited a week.
btw, my tattoos are black and gray only. i can't vouch for color work.
