May 8 (UPI) -- The U.S. Navy's next generation of fighter planes will not be jointly developed with the U.S. Air Force, a Navy official said.

Unlike the F-35, which has variants for each military branch, the Navy does not intend to use the Next Generation Air Dominance aircraft in penetration missions of highly contested airspace. The strategy differs from that of the Air Force.

"A penetrating fighter, the Navy doesn't have to do that. So some of that inherent design of the aircraft, it does drive costs, and if you don't need that for our mission area, then you don't necessarily want to pay for it," Angie Knappenberger, the Navy's deputy director of air warfare, told the Navy League Sea-Air-Space conference Tuesday in National Harbor, Md.

The Navy's NGAD will likely share some systems with current F-35s, she added, as well as with the plane the Air Force develops.
"Some of those systems are going to be very complementary and we are looking forward to what the Air Force is going to be doing, as I'm sure they're going to be looking hard at what we're going to be doing in that system development," Knappenberger said.

The decision comes after the Navy and Air Force collaborated for three decades to develop the F-35. In a money-saving attempt, it was hoped that the F-35s of the Navy, Air Force and Marines would share about 70 percent of common parts. The planes today only share about 20 percent.

The annual conference and trade show is billed as "the largest maritime exposition in the U.S."

They don't need vertical fins all of the sudden?

I saw an article saying USA gave up looking for the downed Japanese F-35.

Here we go,

Great conservatives wasting more money on War. Just what we need. Thanks Trump and his new corporate Boeing Secretary of Defense!

Makes sense. The F-35 is a great plane but its development was crap.

Fighters are sexier than bombers.

But far less fundamental to national security, this is where all the waste is. The stealth bombers are the air-based nuclear deterrent, their primary use isn't for standard warfare and carrying out an imperialist foreign policy of perpetual war. They are designed to fly halfway across the world, manuever undetected into heavily defended air space and drop thermonuclear weapons.

They won't ever have to, because they exist. It's an insurance policy that no country will ever dare fuck with you on some real shit. The SLBM launching nuclear submarines serve that same purpose.

Still need fighters to protect the bombers and fleet and intercept enemy bombers.

So because of intra military branch dick waving, we get to waste a shit ton more money.

Just make one that comes closest to working for both and they can both go fuck themselves.

Slash the military budget from 700billion a year to 400billion. Pay for 1.5 trillion of new infrastructure in 5 years.

Fuck our military leadership. They promised us victories and never delivered. They are con artists and the brass is infected with greed. They no longer represent what is best for the American people.

Edit: and president trump needs to follow up with his campaign promises. If those nations want protection, they can pay for it. If they want their sea lanes open for trade (done by our navy) they can pay for it.

You guys do understand that a land base fighter is not designed to be launched and recovered on a aircraft carriers.

So it makes sense to design for what they are intended for.

Plus their mission is different.

I hope the American imperialist treat us more fairly this time we would gladly join the empire!!!

Fuck the poor the homeless and the environment, let’s make War planes....yahooo..

So basically, SLBM's and B-2/B-21's. Cut the adipose out.

That's news to me. When did the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force start to design planes together? Both the F-16 and the A-10 were purely an Air Force design. No carrier landings. Each service has a different mission and requirement. What about the U.S. Marines? Do they have any input in a plane's design? Were the Navy and Air Force sharing a budget for this? The U.S. Navy usually likes to have two engines and two seats on their planes. The Air Force has had both single and double engines and prefers a one seater.
