yes, they do make more money than say a guy working at McDonald's, and that is because they have a certain degree of skill that they can leverage. and on top of this skill, there are less people will to do those jobs because of the danger. because of that, they are in demand because they are not that easily replaceable relatively speaking. but, then, why are professional athletes paid so much when in theory they are easily replaceable? millions of people around the world play basketball for instance. if going by the numbers, NBA players should be making normal wages; at most six figures a year but more likely something like fifty thousand dollars a year or something. so, why is it despite millions upon millions of people all around the world that play basketball, the guys in the NBA can leverage so much money? because of the brand recognition. they are a brand. people will pay money to see a brand, to wear their jerseys, etc. there are many thousands of basketball players around the world that could replace the entire NBA roster right now, and it would still be an entertaining product because the players would still be high level. but that doesn't happen. why? because the NBA players are a brand and people will pay money to see whatever the established, respected mainstream brand is. people will pay money to see Lebon James pay basketball, not "some rando nobody".
it's just how it is, we are an attention whore society that values brands and social clout
