I literally have bruised knuckles from hitting the pads and bags, I wear MMA gloves with no wraps for the fact my gloves are tight as it is...

Is it normal to get this bruising, is it similar to the bruising you get when first kicking the pads or should I be paying attention to this and not hitting the pads as hard??

Wear boxing gloves and wraps while hitting the bag....while u do this you can put slightly wettened sponges(poor mans knuckle pad) on your knuckles before putting on wraps.

I will just re-state what was already posted. Wear hand wraps and gloves when hitting the bag.

Wraps where them trust me u will be savin urself from wrist and fist injuries wich suck ass

Try some basic makiwara. This would entail smashing your hands open palm on bricks, trees and other hard surfaces.

wrap a cinderblock in 3 towels and hang it from a tree.

bow to your mighty punching god and pay homage daily, making a sacrifice to him from the blood of your knuckles

If your gloves are too tight then buy looser gloves.

Its not always that easy with MMA gloves. XL is too small for me (9 1/2 around the knuckles), and that is as big as it usually gets unless you special order them. The only pre-fab MMA gloves I've ever worn that I can wear wraps under are the Century XXL MMA Bag gloves.
I suggest picking up a pair of these for your mit work, but go ahead and move up to some good boxing-style bag gloves for the heavybag.

hitting the bags without wraps doesn't make you tough

be smart, wrap your hands and wear gloves

I had the same prob xl was as big as i could find so i had to settle..

The wraps did help, didn't eliminate the pain however provided enough protection to help me push through my last work out..
