Adesanya is trying to become the 8th UFC multi-division champion. Let's review the history.
- First multi-division champion was Randy Couture. He won the HW championship 3 times beating Maurice Smith, Kevin Randleman, and Tim Sylvia. He also won the LHW championship twice beating Tito Ortiz and then Vitor Belfort. He beat Chuck Liddell for the interim LHW championship as well. Randy is still the most decorated UFC champion ever.
- Next was BJ Penn. He won the WW championship beating Matt Hughes then later defeated Joe "Daddy" Stevenson to win the LW championship. He attempted (unsuccessfully) to become the 1st simultaneousl champion when he challenged GSP for the WW championship as the reigning LW champion.
- Conor McGregor became the first simultaneous champion first defeating Jose Aldo to win the FW championship then Eddie Alvarez to win the LW championship. He was stripped of both belts having never defended either.
- GSP became the 4th multi-division champion when he defeated Michael Bisping to win the MW championship. He had previously been a 2-time WW champion first beating Matt Hughes then late regaining the belt by defeating Matt Sera (then went on to defend the belt 9 times).
- Daniel Cormier was the 2nd simultaneous champion first defeating Anthony Johnson to win the LHW championship. Then defeating Stipe Miocic to win the HW championship. He was the 1st defend belts successfully in both divisions
- Amanda Nunes was the 3rd simultaneous champion and 5th multi-division champion overall. She won the BW belt by defeating Meisha Tate, then defeated Cris Cyborg to win the FW championship. She has become the only active multi-division champion. But, the women's FW division is not really a true division. There are very few if any full-time fighters in the division, and it doesn't even have a top 10 or even top 5.
- The last multi-division champion was Henry Cejudo. He won a controversial decision over Demetrius Johnson to win the FLW championship. Then later won the BW championship by defeating Marlon Moraes.
