There are a lot of gyms with Muay Thai classes in the NYC area and it seems really hard to find information on all of them, especially considering only one gym publicly posts its prices. Please help me fill in missing information and add any additional details to any of the existing gyms I have posted about. Any experiences with the gyms would be great. Please post dates of attendance and how much you paid.

Church Street
Location: Church Street Boxing Gym
25 Park Place
New York, NY 10007
(212) 571-1333

Facility: Pretty nice boxing gym, Muay Thai is in the back room. The room is awkward to work out in, there is a large boxing ring with no room to work out on three sides of it. Gets cramped quickly. The side that has some room to work out has about ten feet or so of hardwood floor, then it switches to a strange metal floor which you can't workout barefoot on. **Review was previous to their renovation in mid 2010

Instructors: Jason Strout. Seems like a nice guy. I don't think he is a Kru. I felt like the class was lacking mostly in the usage of thai pads, it seemed to be a mix of a cardio kickboxing class with some conditioning drills to make it seem difficult. I feel like Jason isn't into teaching groups, it seems like you'd need to train privately with him for a good workout.

Reputation: Very well known gym, they run the Friday Night Fight series.

Cost: Pretty reasonable, $20 for pay per class. The rest of the rates are actually on their site, seems to be the only gym willing to post their rates.

5 Points
Location: Five Points Academy: Welcome to Five Points
277 Canal
3rd Floor, New York, NY 10013
(212) 226-4474

Facility: Visited once, looked pretty good, had weight equipment, kettle bells, boxing ring...

Instructors: Has a combination of Krus and coaches. I have heard good things about Steve Milles, never trained with any of them.

Reputation: I have seen them compete a few times at events and the fighters do pretty well.

Cost: Pretty expensive, I don't remember the numbers when I visited two years ago.

The Wat

Location: Wat
**Moved in late 2011 to
291 Broadway Level B
(entrance is located on Reade Street)
New York, NY 10013

Old Address
31 Howard Street
New York, NY 10013-3160
(212) 966-4010

Facility: Visited once, very nice, very clean. **New location still has hardwood floors

Instructors: Phil Nurse and others, very friendly. Don't waste your time with the Absolute Beginners class, it is too basic. I wasn't able to try any other classes.

Reputation: Phil Nurse.

Cost: Very expensive. I think the best option is the prepaid package for six months which was either 1k or 1.1k. Or $30 when you pay per class plus a initial membership fee ($200 or something like that).

Fighthouse
Location: Fighthouse
122 West 27th Street, 2nd floor
New York, NY 10001
(212) 807-9202

Facility: Fairly large place, but divided up with a bunch of different martial arts including some weird ones. Muay Thai space is limited and sometimes crowded. Gym is usually dirty. No showers. The people that run the place are constantly dropping my name off the pay per class list because I don't come often enough.

Instructors: Kru Brandon Levi. Very nice guy, pretty good instruction. He constantly criticizes me for taking a step with my kick though.

Cost: Reasonable, $20 pay per class with a $50 membership fee. I was told this is going up on 2010. I think they also have a $135 or so monthly fee.

Reputation: Not too sure, I feel like they aren't as well known. I have only seen one of their fighters at Friday Night Fights and he got KO'ed pretty bad.

CROM
Location: CROM Martial Training
108-13 ROCKAWAY BEACH DRIVE
ROCKAWAY BEACH, NY 11694
718-318-0233

Facility: I trained at their old Upper East Side Location and at Church Street. The UES location was too expensive, he was renting a small area from a specialized gym. Training at Church Street was great. Newest location is way to far from NYC :(

Instructors: Chris Romulo. I don't think he is a Kru, but his instruction is top notch. I had a great workout every time I trained with him. Very positive guy.

Cost: UES was $30 a class, Church Street was an insane $10 per class deal, I wish I wasn't working so much when he was there. I don't know the new gym rates.

Reputation: Chris "Mr Classic" Romulo has fought at a bunch of the Friday Night Fights and usually does well.

Though I train at 5 Points, I hear Sitan has top quality instructors, that's why aclitvof their fighters do quite well. On top of that I notice they have some kind of relationship with a good camp back in Bangkok- Kaewsamrit Boxing Gym. They sell their shorts at least.

I've trained at the wat and sitan. If you're just starting out go to sitan. Aziz, the head instructor, is very good at teaching the fundamentals. If you have the fundamentals down, go and work with Phil at the wat, you'll learn a lot from him in terms of strategy. Also, Phil doesn't teach a straighforward, walk you down style of muay thai that a lot of traditional thai trainers favor.

Go to Lions Roar gym man, it's in the Bronx.
Check out the site lionsroarcamp.com
Kru Williams owns the gym and training is everyday except Sundays.
Cost is $100-$140 a month (Not a 100% sure)
There's a boxing gym being built down stair (Should be done by March I think)
You can also train BJJ here if you like. Check the place out man

Sitan fighters do very very well. Tough SOBs. No screwing around with those guys. They come to bang.

I know a guy that trains a Church Street and heard it is very good.

Coban Lookchaomaesaitong is now teaching in NYC at New York Jiu Jitsu (New York Jiu Jitsu - Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, American Jiu Jitsu, MMA, Yoga, PTK and Strength and Endurance Training). He's a former world champion and a Muay Thai legend (YouTube Highlights here: YouTube - Coban Lookchaomaesaithong HighLights). He's also a fantastic teacher and true class-act.

Coban's apparently been at NYJJ for the past few months but they haven't done the best job of getting the word out. I recently checked out the gym and the facilities are some of the nicest (and cleanest) I've seen in NYC. Everyone I met there (students and instructors) seemed really nice as well. They also have an MMA cage and offer BJJ and MMA classes, both of which are taught by BJJ blackbelts. I didn't get that close a look at either of these classes but what I saw looked pretty good.

The MT class I took there was very much a beginner class and fairly small, which was not a bad thing since it afforded me plenty of personalized attention from Coban (who gave me some fantastic advice to improve my kicks). The flip side is that NYJJ doesn't yet have enough experienced students to merit intermediate or advanced classes, so anyone looking for sparring or more advanced technical training will need to wait until more people find out that Coban is there. Once that happens I have no doubt they'll attract a lot of local talent.

New York Jiu Jitsu now has Dorian Price as Head Muay Thai instructor since Coban moved to Philly.Dorian was on TUF and trained under Master Toddy for over 5 years as well as being a 2 time VFC Champion. I believe the price for unlimited Muay Thai is 180/month but I heard that if you say you heard of them from Sherdog they offer a discount as well.

Dogen Gym, at 257 west 38th street is a GREAT Muay Thai Gym. A few months back i was at Friday Night Fights Muay Thai event in Manhattan and a fighter came out looking dead serious and in fight fit shape. The bell rang and this man who looked like a machine opened up with some of the hardest kicks iv seen. He ended up winning that fight in great fashion and has since fought for and won the belt to make him the current NY UNDEFEATED cruiserweight champion. The man's name is Jason Von Oijen and he is the head trainer at DOGEN GYM. He is a very good instructor and always works hands on with every student in every class. The Muay Thai classes vary from beginner to extremely intense for the active fighter. Jason also runs fight fit classes which are hard conditioning and strength training based and there are also 2 very good boxing instructors that teach boxing. Best gym in NY and the prices are fair ranging from i think as low as 125-175

i realize its a beginner class but i see a lot of low hands in that vid. im not talking about the kicking side arm swinging either.

maybe its just me but i keep my opposite side hand (non-kicking arm) glued to the side of my head. then again, maybe thats also why i dont generate the most power either.

i could understand if they were bringing the non-kicking side arm across the face in a some sort of a cross block but theyre just swinging both arms it seems and their hands just seem low to begin with in their regular stance.

the only guy with any decent skill in that vid is the big(ger) white dude in the blue short and his hands are pretty low also. ive always been taught you should be hitting pads or bags like how youre gonna fight. if you leave your hands lazy like that in sparring, youre gonna get tagged a lot.

disclaimer: i have never trained old school boxing but im guessing old school Muay Thai would have your hands higher than what is shown.

I packed up and moved to NYC a couple months ago to pursue my Muay Thai career and website full-time, so I did my fair share of research before moving down. I originally planned on training at Sitan gym but I was matched up with a fighter from there so I trained at Evolution for the fight. The plan was to train at Sitan afterwards, which I did for a very short stint, but the atmosphere, space, and training schedule didn't fit my needs as well as Evolution.

Even though I've been training at Evolution for a little over a month now it already feels like a second family. Yes there are a lot of beginners but there are also a decent amount of well-trained, solid technical fighters. The videos shown are a little dated and the gym looks completely different.

I can see how Brandon Levi can rub some people the wrong way but his sense of humor cracks me up. He also is very devoted to his fighters and shows that he really has a passion for the sport. Even though I've only trained there for a short time, he's been great in helping me train. I had an amateur title defense for Take On Productions Muay Thai XIX in Queens and he got me more than prepared for it. He took time out of his busy schedule to hold pads for me, improve my technique and push my cardio. He even made time for other fighters that had fights coming up too (for no extra charge mind you).

I know I didn't get time to train at or check out many other gyms, but the atmosphere at Evolution and the way Brandon welcomed me stood out. I'd highly recommend at least giving this place a try if you're looking for solid training in a non-intimidating atmosphere.

If you can you owe it to yourself to take some classes from Aaron @ King's.
