would it be easier to do muay thai for self defence 2-3 days a week, or do boxing and bjj (MMA) for self defence?

I love boxing, but I don't know if it should be a preferred method of self-defense. Obviously someone trained in boxing can defend themselves, but think of it this way:
-- Most people that are going to give you trouble are going to just start winging punches at your face. Even as a superior boxer, do you really want to get into that with a stranger?
-- Without proper protection, it's incredibly easy to break the tiny bones in your hand on someone knucklehead's skull.
-- When the police show up and this guy's got a black eye and a bloody nose, it's going to be much harder to claim self-defense.

Meanwhile, a takedown can easily subdue a single opponent without much harm to you or your assailant. I also happen to think the muay Thai clinch and the leg kick are both invaluable weapons for self-defense.

This is all just my opinion, of course. In the end, I think the other advice in this thread ("Do what you enjoy doing") is very good.

if you do muay thai, will you get as fast handspeed as a boxer would? Like do they concentrate on hands alot or is it the whole 8 limbs etc

20% Punches
20% Clinch
20% Knees
20% Elbows
20% Kicks

?

Depends on how much time you personally put into developing hand speed.

what if i took boxing ontop of that, like say muay thai 2 times a week plus sparring on the weekend, if i added a boxing class on that, would it help?

I know it's going to depend on the instructor and class, but personally in my MT classes so far (only done about 8 so far) I'd say the total time on each strike is more like this:

15% Punches
10% Clinch
15% Knees
10% Elbows
50% Kicks

And if anything the kicks might even be higher than that, as it was a very rough estimate.

EDIT: so what I meant to say was, IMO no MT does not build equal hand speed to boxing... and at my club, the intention of the punches is usually to create openings and set up kicks/knees, rather than be powerful attacks in themselves.

oh okay thats fair enough too, does your muay thai have gradings in it? I was reading that places have singlets instead like Brown Singlet or Black Singlet etc?

Doing boxing and Bjj separtly is not mma training. Training mma in a mma class is mma training. But go ahead and put your pajamas on and pillows on your hand and learn your x guard sweeps and let me know how that does you in a real fight.

Modern BJJ is the worst form of self defense.

Thats why Im Doing MMA on the weekends, from my qualified teacher who's a Black Belt or Red Belt in BJJ and also trains MMA fighters here in Canberra ACT ;) Oh and as everyone who thinks theyre the next rampage jackson on here says, "You cant just train one style and think thats MMA, mix it up" exactly right, you cant just train one style..you gotta train 2 styles and the styles i feel most comfterble in are Boxing and BJJ, so you go ahead and talk with your friends about what colour your gonna paint your nails and leave us grown people talk ok :)

Oh and matter of fact, it'l do real well concidering REAL fights only last for about 30 seconds coz the other guy is so fucked after throwing windmilss of punchs ;) You get an experienced fighter there with a good ground game and knows how to throw and take a punch, i think we know who's gonna win..

tell that to bj penn and shinya aoki.

^if your teacher or any you train with said anything about your teacher being a redbelt in BJJ, leave immediately.

As for the guy that said BJJ is not an effective form of self defense, UFC 1 begs to differ.

one of the dudes there said summin about it, dont really care what colour belt they have shit im just in it for the experience, and exactly shit BJ Penn has great ground and pound.

Ya But how long ago was that? Maia with all his awesome bjj couldnt even close the distance properly and get to the clinch. At least Royce could do that. They dont teach that shit in BJJ anymore. I said modern bjj not bjj from 15yrs ago. When was the last time anyone on this board trained closing the distance and clinching and taking the fight to the ground against someone who is trying to ko the fuck outta you? That is basic Gracie JiuJitsu

Sport bjj which is what modern bjj is now days= not good for self defense. But hey show someone who wants to beat your ass your grapplers quest medals and I am sure he will shake in his boots and run away

Now your talking alot of money. I dont know about where you live. But boxing classes here run $100 a month, MT classes run about the same. JJ classes run about $120. Its a good idea to take all of them if you want to make up for lost time, but not practical if you barely have enough money to pay for rent by the end of the month.

Boxing is very good defensively, as is Bjj.
Also covers you for both ground and standing situations.

For self defense, I would always suggest learning a good standup art and bjj so you can be prepared for whatever. Although I have not rolled in nearly 3 years I still remember more than enough to get by in a street fight if I ended up on the ground somehow.

lol mate boxing here is at the local sports club trained by professionals, $6 on tuesday and thursday hour and a half each, they have a class there as were if your good enough you can train whenever you want. Its called the Elite Class, were theres a room upstairs thats got EVERYTHING in it, they train boxers to become ameture and there was a guy there who was turning professional and shit so :)

Muay thai, dont know how much that is yet, but same deal hour and a half but like 15 mins away so :( this boxing place is 2 minutes down the road. BJJ is near my work which is 10 mins away wich cost $80 per month on monday and wednesdays and they have open mat session for 2 hours on a friday and MMA on saturday and sunday. Im 17 mate and i live at home with my olds coz im in my apprenticeship still in mechanics :)

My plan is like in 3 years i have left on it i wanna be atleast a blue belt or near purple belt in BJJ and have had a good run of boxing experience, but the sad part is i still have a loose shoulder and i think ive either torn or stretched the tedons or ligaments so if i can find a way to tighten them im happy..but i dont think i can without surgery to make them tight :(

thats not just my plan, its my fuckin dream dude i really wanna do BJJ and make it to atleast blue belt if not purple belt, so if anybody has any info about ligaments and tightening them then i'd love to hear it :)

Thanks

man fuck it, david went against goliath and won, impossible is nothing i spose so fuck it ill see a physio once a week and do excersizes every morning :) Strengthen it up and just tap when i feel it loose and shit, thanks for the help though dudes :)
