started Muay Thai about a month ago...took the last week off to let my shin recover. was doing our usual light sparring at the end of class and low kicked right into my partner's kneecap as he was raising his leg to check it. it was immediately painful for both of us and we had to stop for a minute. my shin swelled up a bit right away and it has left a lump under the skin, which has slowly gotten smaller over the last two weeks. i have a similar, smaller lump on my right shin as well. not much pain in it anymore...just some tenderness at the bump. also, i will add that i was not wearing shin guards at the time, but have purchased and used them ever since that happened. is this normal for starting out? do these bumps happen with the use of shin guards also or is it just something you have to get used to?

Yes, normal for starting out and for those that have trained a while. Hitting your bone against another bone will cause damage. Depending on the severity of damage, your body will react accordingly.

Sometimes it's just a bit of swelling and it goes away soon, sometimes it's a nice goose-egg on the bone that takes a month to fully improve.

Wear your shin pads when you know there's a chance for a hard impact to the shin. That's what they're there for.

yeah...i just hadnt gotten around to buying them...wished i had sooner. im assuming that if the pain is gone and only minor swelling remains, i should be able to train normally. its basically like some sort of bone contusion or something?

My shin bones are all bumpy now. Can't see it, but I can feel it if I rub them. My coach said it was okay, and some guys on Sherdog said it was normal. That's all I know.

I've been training for about six years now and I still get these from time-to-time. I'm a little shocked that they've taken weeks to go down. Whenever I get them, I apply an ACE bandage (or similar, obviously) and an ice pack and it's gone within an hour or so. The bandage should be tight, but not so tight that it cuts off circulation, obviously.

well...its been about 3 weeks now, so im assuming that its a permanent thing at this point. guess i should have iced it the day it happened

I just got my first shin bump. It's been about 2 weeks and it's still there. I guess I should stop kicking in sparring until it heals?

I did the exact same thing sparring (karate, not MT) about 3 weeks ago and I still have a swollen, bruised lump on my right shin. Mine was a hard enough collision that it was actually a blotchy black colored bruise for the first two weeks--bone bruises are awesome :icon_cry2

If you got it really good it'll be swollen and sore for probably about a year (happened to me once when a guy slammed the point of his elbow between my shin bone and the muscle) but otherwise you'll probably be good to go in another month or so. Then again, I don't heal particularly fast so you might be good to go faster than that.

I've got a nice bruise on my shin at the moment that hasn't gone away after a few weeks. I can feel it, but it's not painful. Though I had a knee clash in sparring a few days ago, felt it happen, woke up in the morning with the biggest mother fucking bruise i've ever seen and it never hurt at all :|

yeah, some of the time those bumps take a very long time to go away if ever but it won't hurt you in the long run

I still have bumps and scars from mountain biking years ago, a few more won't matter at this point. :icon_twis

its completely normal. simple solution dont spar with out shinguards! haha. hitting pads and bags will make them tougher, no need to injure yourself sparring

Sorry for the bump (pun), but I was wearing shin guards during todays sparring and when I got home I had a huge bump on my right upper shin. Kinda odd, because I don't remember anyone checking excessively, and during sparring it didn't hurt at all.
I really can't remember when it must have occured...

Big lumps like that just make me think of haematomas, which take a while to heal up (I've just come back from one). Is it still painful? Can you walk properly? I don't think there's too much you can do asides from ice, compress, and use anti-flam to aid the healing process.

hahaha...i clicked on this thread just now, not realizing it was mine from a year ago when i started Muay Thai.

yes, they go away eventually but now my shins are fairly lumpy. or maybe they already were before i started MT but i cant tell now lol

Happens often enough, even with shinpads on. What always works for me is ice and compression. When I get lumped up, I'll go home and wrap the bump a couple of times with an ACE bandage, apply a small ice pack, use the remainder of the ACE to hold the ice pack in place, and leave it there for no more than 10 minutes. Works like magic.

Those bumps on your shin have nothing to do with your bones. It's all soft tissue damage. I know it feels hard like a lump of bone sticking out, but it's just swollen soft tissue.

I had a K1 rules fight last year where I kept throwing my left kick over and over in spite of the fact that my opponent kept shin checking them. My shins are well conditioned and it didn't hurt at all, so I just kept throwing my left kick. I think on some level I wanted to see who's shins would give out first.

I felt fine immediately after the fight, I even hiked up and down Taishan mountain the next day (one of China's tallest mountains) without a problem. But the next week I had a huge hard knot in the middle on my shin. The next time I tried kicking a bag at the gym it felt like I had snapped my leg in two.

I had smaller bumps from sparring before, and these always went away in a few weeks, but this bump was still there after a month and I was worried my shin was fractured because of the pain.

So I went to the doctor and had it X-rayed (fortunately medical services are dirt cheap in China) My bone was fine- not a scratch on it. The only problem was swelling in the soft tissue that covers the shin bone. It feels like death, but the solution is simple- rest. All it takes is time.

I've been reading about liniment oil. Apply that and magic occurs. Seems too good to be true, lol.
I wear shin guards of course when sparring, but I am just confused how this one got through. I'll see how it feels tonight, I've been icing it every chance I get.

Damage to the shins during muay thai causes mini fractures on the bone which causes small hematomas and calcium deposits to form on the bones hence the little bumps. Its gonna go away by itself or at least it won't be painful anymore but remember bone bruises tend to take a long time to heal if you keep hurting it time after time, so take couple of days off and let it heal completely before you start training again and wear shinguards next time

Can you get to the point where you can throw a hard kick, have it checked, and not feel it just by kicking the bag and pads?

I can wail on the bag as hard as possible and be fine but goddamnit getting checked still hurts like a b
