Okay.

So, I'm competing in Vancouver at the Western Canadian Martial Arts Challenge on October 21. So, just under two months.

I've trained a year, 9 months in BJJ and sub wrestling, I've done some privates at a local kickboxing club, done Taekwondo for about 2.5 years (albiet years and years ago). And I trained very basic MMA for about 5 months, but haven't for about 3 months since.

So I decided I'm going to compete in Modified Pankration.

I have a general idea what the rules are. But has anyone competed in it?

Thoughts? Suggestions as to what I should train against? Any general information?

Thanks in advance.

Oct 21 in Van? shit, I got a Muay Thai fight the same night in N.Van, wonder if it's the same place?

Anywho...ask your teacher, they should have all the rules. As far as in know, its MT rules for stand up (minus the elbows, we are in BC after all), take downs and sub. fighting onthe ground. the few Pankration bouts I've seen in Vancouver had Gn'P to the face with fists, but I don't think you could elbow or knee.

You might want to call the org. and have them fax/e-mail the rules.

Is this in N. Van?

You're not from Avatar Martial arts, are you?

Yeah, thats the one.

I know what the rules are, but I'm not quite sure what to train for. I've never competed in a sport with strikes and grappling allowed, so I'm not sure what I should practice. Takedown defense, or do I want the match there? Do they stand up in my guard a lot? Etc.

I've trained at Avatar Martial Arts several times. They have good striking, but I didn't like how much they tried to promote the Kenpo - thats not useful to me, and they kept giving me bad habbits as far as competing goes.

I currently train at the Gracie Barra club, ran by purple belt Sterling Redlack. I used to train at the Jiu-Jitsu Academy of Combat Arts under Marcus Soares purple belt Tony Williamson. So, I've tried pretty much every worthwhile club in Kelowna, with the exception of Toshido Fighting - but they put a lot of emphasis on striking, and very little on grappling, so I don't plan on it.

I'll go compete with my gi on, in any case. Pull a Royce Gracie and just lunge for the legs constantly. I have good cardio, so I'm sure I can lunge for 3 minutes straight if I have to. I'm so one-dimentional it's ridiculous, so it'll be fun tapping out some well-rounded guys.
Next stop: Pride ;)

haha...I think grappling is the focus, simply because you can't hit full contact to the face, or stike on the ground.

However, a well place body or leg shot could tip the scales, so don't discount that, or it might be your undoing.

At any rate, good luck and hope you have fun.

Peace.
