I know Cain lost to Steve in college. if anybody saw the match, was it total a domination/blowout?

It was a 1 pt match. Velasquez maybe should have gotten a stall call and won; he was pushing the action.

Thanks dude, I look forward to see what Mocco brings into the cage, did you happen to see his collegiate match against Konrad? what specific wrestling/judo based attack is he known for? I read his bio, but i've never seen him wrestle.

We wrestled Mocco a few times in college, but our guy must have wrestled Cain 3-4 times. I was there matside when Mocco got stuck by Konrad. Pretty awesome because the whole dual was down to that match. Mocco was known for a footsweep, but scored mostly on pushouts in freestyle. Cain was always just constantly moving and faster than most guys.

I am of the opinion that Mocco's international career does not accurately reflect his skill level or quality as a wrestler. In most of his losses, he wins the hand fighting battle, is the aggressor, and imo, is the one who better embodies the spirit of the sport. His opponents are generally taking more steps back, spend more time trying to fight off Mocco's tie-ups than they do initiating their own, and generally are trying to survive the pressure until the goofy modern freestyle rules open up an opportunity to score a cheap point.

For example, our current Olympian vs. Mocco (our last Olympian).

Mocco loses this match 2-0, but did he really get out wrestled? Not in the way I define that term. Imo, he lost on the scoreboard but was definitely not beaten.

I agree with your assessment of Mocco. He was the epitome of a control wrestler who wore opponents down and scored with pressure. Unfortunately, FS rules do not reward that style.

On a side note, I went out with Steve a few times when we were both at the OTC for beers. He is pretty funny and not at all what you would think. Very cool guy and one hell of a wrestler.

Thanks for the response dude. have you ever seen him in live judo tourneys? what's your opinion of him as a MMA HW prospect? is he a contender right out of the gate like askren, and cormier? or will his striking need more polish? I think ATT is a good camp it just seems like they're emphasis is more grappling than striking. idk really do they have a good balance? Thiago is there most prominent fighter, and his Ground Game leaves much to be desired.

Never seen him do judo. I would bet his striking will improve pretty quickly. He is a guy who probably has a ton of power in his hands, much more so than an Askren or Cormier. Plus, his smothering style will work well for his top game IMHO. Then again, who knows, he might suck, but, Liborio said he has more potential than almost anyone he has ever seen.

When did Mocco start cross training for MMA if that's what he's doing?

How do ppl think Cain would have done in freestyle wrestling?? I really love his style.

There is no reason to think Cain wouldn't do well but there is not reason to think he would have been better than Mocco, Konrad, Rowlands, Dlagnev. IMO he wouldn't beat Mocco. Mocco's defense was to ggod and he was to good a of a handfighter and bully to lose to Cain in FS.

I also don't see any tools he had that would make him more dangerous than Rowlands or Dlanev for an undersized heavy.

He probably would have been a top 5 guy.

I think the thing that might separate Mocco is his insane work ethic and intensity.

Do you post on usawrestling? You can PM me

ANother wrestler to look out for is Shawn Bunch.

Not to sound like Joe Rogan but Bunch is explosive. He is one of the quickest wrestlers I have seen and if he picks up the boxing he will be dangerous. He has won some of the most prestigious wrestling tournaments outside of World/Olympics and was our Olympian in 08.

It will be exciting to watch.

If Darrion Caldwell can recover from the shoulder injury and is focused he is another to watch.

He's been doing judo since he was a small child. So that would give him some submission awareness.
He also played football on the defensive line for the Oklahoma State.

His striking is the big question mark. Will he have pillow hand and bad technique in the striking dept like Phil Davis or Mark Coleman or will he have an H bomb like Dan Henderson or the killer instinct like Jon Jones.

His height might be the biggest handicap at 6 feet for HW. He'd have to be a Fedor/ Cormier type but is that good enough to become champion with 6-4 guys like Dos Santos, Overeem or even a HW Jon Jones.

Yes, I post on themat.com. I was a top 5 60kg for the last 4 years and was/am an OTC resident athlete.

I think Bunch will do very well.

Caldwell I'm not so sure about. He never struck me as being very focused or mentally tough. He is certainly an incredible athlete though with all the physical tools you could ever need.

The best wrestler who is transferring to MMA is Jeremiah Davis. I have seen his striking and he trains Jitz everyday with legit black belts. He is going to be very hard to beat at 135

I didn't know he was making the switch. That should be interesting

Could be tough for this guy with the short arms and barrel chest. Tying up and wading thru the strikes. Most smaller HW's are quick, he doesn't seem quick in the manner.

Mark Ellis has had a rough time of it so far compared to other HW Wrestlers brought in by AKA. It's still very early for him but he hasn't taken to MMA as excepted. He was the 2009 HW champ out of Missouri.

That's exactly what I would think. He seems like a super cool cat.

His two on instructional vids are phenomenal. Agreed as well about his hand fighting skills. Something we could stand to improve on if we hope to do well in London.

Is Calwell talking about doing MMA? That would be awesome.

If Darrion Caldwell can recover from the shoulder injury and is focused he is another to watch.
