I've been trying to find some more information on MMA schools in Norman and possibly OKC (I found a semi-related thread from almost three years ago) but I wanted to know if anyone on here CURRENTLY trains at or can recommend a good MMA gym in Norman or Southern Oklahoma City?

A seemingly endless google search of bad links and closed gyms finally led to Titan Martial Arts and Conan's Kickboxing - just wondered if anyone that frequents the forums and trains in the area could offer some advice on your experiences or recommendations.

Hmm, I train Boxing at Guerreros currently, and have frequented the Isolabella gym.. and both gyms have MMA guys who wish to cross train. And quite a few of the guys are from Lavatos BJJ... not sure if thats an MMA place or just BJJ though..

I can vouch for one thing though, the Conan guys all wear matching tracksuits at the smokers I have seen them at, which is gay looking.

@Fzubek That's hilarious, I visited Conan's the other day and was not impressed.

I am a little new to some of the terminology: Smoker? Is that another term for school vs. school?

@MMA_Outsider I have read nothing but good things about Lovato's BJJ but I'd prefer to train multiple disciplines if possible. I haven't had a chance to visit, but from the info on the website it appears to be only BJJ. I actually hope I am incorrect on that though.

It might be, Im not sure exactly what goes on in that school, Ive just seen their guys at our gyms, and have driven by it several times..

A smoker is I guess just the term for a fight or exhibition match... they had these Junior Olympic bouts in Anadarko in April, so there were JO (junior olympic fights) and all the other matchups were referred to as 'smoker' fights..

I've never been to Lovato's but I did enquire via e-mail and Lovato, Jr. told me their classes are a mixture of striking and BJJ but the BJJ is their specialty. Also, their schedule shows Wrestling on Thursdays and boxing on Fridays.

I spent a short time at Redline BJJ in Edmond and they had three tracks: BJJ, Muay Thai and MMA. BJJ had the most students followed closely by Muay Thai (generally in 10-16 range on any given day) with the most MMA people I ever saw being 6 in a class. It seems like someone told me that you have to be a blue belt in BJJ before starting MMA but I may be mistaken about that. I enjoyed the Muay Thai, it was about 10-15 minutes of warming up and then 45-50 minutes of pad drills.

Can you tell us a little bit about Guerreros and Isolabella's? I've had even less luck finding a boxing gym in the OKC area than the original poster has had finding an MMA gym.

I appreciate all of the information, and it has helped me make a few decisions. One would think that there would be a greater variety of training especially in a state that does so many locally promoted fights. It's almost disappointing.

I have reached out to several people on here and other forums and the only thing out there are BJJ schools that put MMA somewhere on their page to capitalize on the revitalized popularity of mixed martial arts. No doubt that there are some really great schools out there for specific disciplines, but when it comes to a true MMA training experience (meaning for people not actively fighting) it simply doesn't exist.

One thing that has come out my search is that I simply need to change my expectation of what "should be" available and be happy that I have world class martial arts instruction so close and at my disposal. The simple fact is that what I envisioned doesn't exist. Officially off of soapbox.

I've actually trained at both conan's and lovatos so maybe I can help you out. When it comes to grappling, lovatos would be the best way to go. They have more experienced grapplers, compete in tourneys regularly, and Lovato Jr. is a bjj world champion. Conans has an mma class that uses lots of different techniques, some from bjj, and a traditional JJ class but doesn't really have any bjj class/lineage. Both have cages but neither really use them much. When it comes to striking, Conan's is probably better. The whole place is run by Scott "Conan" Mincey, a champion kickboxer. They have more bags and actually have a ring and regular stand-up sparring. Lovato's doesn't have a ring and no stand-up sparring. Conans has a lot of guys that compete in boxing/kickboxing on the amateur level and a few pro guys. Lovatos classes are usually more full than conans and lovatos is newer looking and cleaner. I think there is a place called USA stars in Moore which supposedly has good mma but i've never been there. Its ran by Ron Tripp, the guy who beat rickson in sambo, I think. Id check each place out, but if it comes between lovatos and conans its more what you want to focus on: grappling or stand-up. Sorry about the wall of text
