BAMAKO, Mali (AP) — Ruling military juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger say the three countries are withdrawing from the International Criminal Court, accusing the global tribunal of what they say is selective justice.

The pullout was not unexpected in the wake of the coups that brought the juntas to power in the three western African countries. The ICC, based in The Hague, is the world’s permanent global tribunal for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.

Since the coups, the three countries’ military leaders abandoned longtime partners, including the West and the West Africa regional bloc. They have established new alliances, mainly with Russia, whose President Vladimir Putin faces an arrest warrant by the ICC over Russia’s war in Ukraine.

In a joint statement late on Monday announcing their withdrawal, the three said the ICC has become an “instrument of neocolonial repression in the hands of imperialism,” without elaborating on the allegation. The juntas also said they are seeking more “sovereignty” and hinted at a local option to the court.

The withdrawal process from the ICC takes at least a year to complete. Earlier this year, Hungary also announced its withdrawal from the court.

@LeonardoBjj it's an interesting story.

The issue isn't so much the regime pulling out of the ICC, the UN Security Council could in theory still go after them. Rather, it's the partnership with Russia and moving away from Europe that's the real story. They are looking for protection from the ICC in the form of Russian UNSC veto power from UN military actions or sanctions.

I wonder what they have done/have planned to make this move? What does Russia get in return?

between this and China's neocolonialism in Africa, there's a lot to be gained doing this. The US has a history as well, but with the isolationist moves, it is giving more of an opening to Russia and China to exploit Africa.

These countries pointing out the UN generally and the ICC being an instrument of neocolonialism and imperialism is spot on. However, they aren't leaving it by looking for a Russian daddy to protect them. They are going to sell their country's resources on the cheap to Russia for protection and stability for their regime.

Is the junta the same government that was running things the past few years or did the dirt bike rebels they were fighting take over?

- This. THey hire Wagner and other PMC's to protect them. but Wagner has the advantage of being a arm of the Russia goverment, with infinite power and influence.

There's some small differences. Russia and China are more prone to tech transfer than US and EU. In the end it may end being more of the same, but from some of those countries perspectives it may be worth the shot.

- US helps more with intangible things like nutrition and vax. Russia and China like to show things they build. Also Russia, unlikwe china doesnt has a problem in buinding nuclear facilities.
