Probably because gay is usually taken literally, whereas motherfucker isn't. Still makes no sense to have gay as a slur, but that I suspect is part of the explanation.

But that's the hilarity of the scenario. It's the absurdity that Perry would correlate the reporter's line of questioning to that of being accused of as gay; and then taking it as derogatory.

I was pretty sure when people used to say "that's gay" it was referring to the definition of the word.

"foolish, stupid, or unimpressive."
People also used to say a gay old time, which was like a happy experience.
