pretty much all chinese people will have a chinese name whether or not they have an english name.

So their kid fits in, better assimilation into society, less scrutiny than someone with a traditional Chinese name. For example if you're name was Hai Lo Ping and you applied to a job, just looking at your name they're going to have assumptions about you that aren't favorable as opposed to someone named Austin Smith. You will have the door slammed in your face before you even meet anyone.

this is true but now I think they are more or less giving them official amercican (nick)names like "danny" (instead of daniel), then also give them an unofficial asian name they call them at home which is actually their nickname for him/her.

that is at least what I have been seeing lately within the bay area of california. I have no idea what things are like elsewhere

My grandpa goes by Bob. His middle name is Robert. My other grandpa goes by Arthur and his name is David Lee Cordova. Don't ask me how that happened. I have gone by Brad my whole life, full name Bradley John Cordova. Fun fact for the road, my dad's full legal name is Johnny Angel Cordova.
