Why do we have names that we eventually shorten? I think we should be called by the shortened version from the jump (birth certificate) and be done with it.

I mean there was probably some guy who started it naturally. William becomes Will, Michael becomes Mike.

Then some troll came along and was like, and James is Jim, Robert is Bob, and Richard is Dick.
 
As someone who comes from a non-English speaking country, it takes a while to understand why several nations would be totally okay with Dick as a nickname not being an insult.

How the fuck did you guys have Dick and Bush in the White House? That's like the name of a bad comedy duo or something.

My uncle is called Dick.

Uncle Dick.

He has a good sense of humor about it. But yes, his name is Richard. Different time though. I have a hard time imagining a kid growing up today in High School being named Dick. Unless he was a big guy, and they called him Big Dick.

Went to high school with a guy called Dick Wang. On the very first day of school when the principal announced his name everyone started to chuckle. Then the principal said "Stop it. Stop it right now. How would you feel if your name was Dick Wang."

Oddly enough, that did not help the situation. Poor guy had to stand up and walk down to the front of the auditorium in front of 300 of his peers.

Thats just wrong, and then he makes it sound worse by repeating it in that way.

I went to the pharmacy the other day and lady asked me if I wanted to be called Michael or Mike. I told her I go by my middle name. She lol'd.
 
A lot of asian people do that. I have a friend named danny instead of daniel and so on
