Message boards for intellectual/book discussions?

Are there any boards out there that engage in serious discussion--i.e. not a bunch of political vitriol or popular science? I found a few science, economics, and philosophy forums, but they seem extremely inactive.

You could try the james randi or sam harris forums. Lots of 'intellectuals' like yourself. Or you could just stay here on sherdog as they really don't compare.

I spent some time in the philosophy section of the literature.com forums, but found it was mostly pretentious posturing.

That said there was one poster who was amazing, but he got banned after a month or so. Reminded me of JSN.

Look for places and people that intellectuals and their wannabes gather around.. Dawkins and Harris have forums I believe, athiest gathering sites in general tend to be like that, or any skeptical secular or hyper-rational communities, LessWrong and Edge.com as science discussion places etc.

I am trying desperately to avoid pomposity and people who want to talk about how deep they are being.

Intellectual was probably the wrong word. Intelligent people is probably more what I was aiming at. Skeptic forums tend to be rife with that stuff.

Honestly, I would post here, but I am looking to actually communicate as my real self with some people and I have probably said some stuff on this site that I'd rather not have identified with me.
