I just always find it funny when people from the UK call us convicts... when it was the poms who they sent here, that were the actual convicts.

Aussie, "You Poms look down on us just because we're descended from convicts!"

Ustinov, "Actually, I'm rather more concerned that some of you must be descended from the prison officers..."

There is actually a lot of truth to that. If 95% of the convicts were male... they aren't breeding. Despite what the modern left seem to believe, biological sex is actually a thing

It's a shame people have brought country-vs-country bashing into a Merry Christmas thread, and I know the convict origin thing is a touchy subject for Australians, but firstly the male:female convict ratio wasn't that high, and secondly the Government deported or encouraged and assisted the emigration of lots of females to Australia. There was one scheme called the Earl Grey scheme, I don't remember the names of the others.

You can imagine that in those days, without a lot of the technology we have today, in a country with a large male surplus lots of women would be required for various purposes, and moving Down Under was a good option for lots of women too. A lot of them got free passage, healthcare, food and a job when they go there, that kind of thing, none of which perhaps they had beforehand.

Yeah, anyone coming later via immigration, was a different matter. The truth is, most of the original convicts died out without procreating.
