A basic one-two combination drops Chad Mendes, followed by a few punches to seal the deal. At 4:57 of the second round, the fight is over.

Conor McGregor is the new Interim Champion of the featherweight division, just like he said he would be. Also, Chad Mendes fell in the second round, just like McGregor said he would.

You gotta watch the fight with the sound off, huge difference

Cool read, nice work.

I agree that it was interesting that McG didn't try to escape from the bottom at all until Chad went for the sub, and got up immediately. i too think he was conserving energy and essentially waiting. He even referred to this post fight saying he was remaining "efficient".

Good post.

I was really curious to see how Conor would react had the fight gone into the 3rd.

He seemed content to let Chad work in guard but he would have been down 2 rounds per the judges cards.

It was a risk/reward strat that paid off in spades.

too much talk
give the man a full camp, then we'll see what happens

Chad was hurt to the body immediately. After the first spinning back kick that landed, he started slowing down. I re-watched the fight, and outside of 5 or 6 punches (which were BOMBS, props to Conor's chin) Conor teed off on Chad standing.. it wasn't close. I think the damage on the ground is overstated too. He had a handful of nice elbows, one that cut him, but Conor never slowed down or was hurt. Professional 145'ers who are world class like Mendes don't gas in 2 minutes. He was hurt, and Conor never let the pressure up. Re-watch the fight, his body work is relentless with the front snap kicks to the solar plexus.

LOL is that a Shogun/Machida 1 reference?

That fight was brilliant for MMA, fans debate that still to this day.

If this was true, then why did Mcgregor's face look so beat up, while Chad look like he hadn't even been in a Fight?

watch the presser. outside of the cut, mendes' face is actually more marked up. mcgregor won that fight with body work, though.

Chads offense is overstated vastly just first time anyone has any kind of success against conor

Conor won both rounds.

He outstruck and visibly hurt chad in round 1 for 3 mins or so.

And he finished him in the second

Well, it's interesting. The short notice fight, the body blows or the repeated takedowns from Chad not amounting to anything but points on a scorecard. Which is the most legit excuse for Chad?

I'd like to think that it's actually a mix of all the factors.

We're not talking about any old wrestler here from a subpar part of the division. This is the most dominant wrestler in the division and arguably the #2 guy as well.

Yep. Mendes was done at the end of the second. McGregor did more damage without a doubt.

This is the complete story of the fight. Yes, Chad only had a few weeks of HARD camp, but this pic sums up why Chad was lethargic. He ate about a dozen of these.

Funny I don't remember the winner being the one curled up in the foetal position barely holding on to consciousness, waiting for the ref to safe him as his opponent battered him into submission.

Chad did some good things (some were highlighted in the blog post). McGregor's offense was just too much.

Yes! Mendes was done after taking all the damage. McGregor still had plenty left in him. It really is that simple.

Agree with this. I actually think McGregor won the 1st round after watching the fight several times now.

Conor had a cut, Mendes couldn't breath, winced with every body shot and got KO'd so what the fuck are you talking about? Cosmetics? Then go read an episode of Vogue you woman. The "he looked more beat up argument" is for MMA noobs.
