Mayweather Owes Taxes, Asks IRS to Wait For McGregor Fight

by David P. Greisman

Floyd Mayweather Jr. owes federal taxes for 2015, but while he says he has more than enough money to pay them, he doesn’t quite have enough cash.

Yet.

Mayweather has filed a petition with the United States Tax Court saying much of his money is tied up and cannot be easily converted into cash, and asking for a short-term installment agreement allowing him more time to get the cash, according to Bryan Koenig of Law360. (Paul Gift of BloodyElbow.com also tweeted about the filing.)

That cash would come when he faces mixed martial arts superstar Conor McGregor in a pay-per-view boxing match on Aug. 26.

“Although the taxpayer has substantial assets, those assets are restricted and primarily illiquid,” Mayweather’s filing said, according to the Law360 report. “The taxpayer has a significant liquidity event scheduled in about 60 days from which he intends to pay the balance of the 2015 tax liability due and outstanding.”

The filing also asks the government to waive a penalty for failing to pay.

The government, meanwhile, argues that Mayweather has the ability to pay his taxes in full or part.

“The agency said that Mayweather had various options available … including by selling property, withdrawing cash from other accounts or taking out a loan,” the Law360 report said.

Mayweather’s gone back and forth with the IRS over the years. The agency filed a $6.17 million lien on Mayweather in 2008 for his 2007 taxes, according to a 2009 report in the Grand Rapids Press.

Mayweather ended up settling that for around $5 million, but in 2011 the IRS said the fighter owed $3.4 million in taxes incurred in 2009 and due in 2010, according to a report at the time in the Grand Rapids Press.

He also had to pay off liens the IRS filed against him in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2006, according to an Associated Press report in 2009.

Just last year, the U.S. Tax Court entered a decision on income taxes due dating back a decade ago:

“Pursuant to the agreement of the parties in this case, it is ordered and decided that there is a deficiency in income tax due from petitioner for the taxable year 2006 in the amount of $1,627,563.00; and that there is no penalty due from petitioner for the taxable year 2006.”

LMFAO. That's what happens when you rent a fake LIEfestyle that you can't afford.

Anyone need some plumbing work done?

Gives the rumors that he recently lost a lot of money some credence.

This guy is going to end up like all the other boxing superstars.......flat broke.

Same guy who was keeping $100m in a checking account not too long ago.

He now needs McGregor if only to keep a roof over his head. Sad story to be honest.

Floyd should be like Conor rent stuff dont pay no need in buying those 3 million dollar cars that depreciate off the lot, just rent them like conor and claim them as your own nobody will known unless you stand on the car and post it on instagram and piss off the car rental place. Floyd actually buys those watches and expensive clothes, why buy a jacket that cost 5 thousand dollars? why buy a watch that cost 300 thousand dollars? why throw 50k at strippers in a club?

Rappers were doing that for years, Floyd though actually buys these things, its why he has no more cash, he ran through that 150 million in cash from the Pac fight, half that goes to taxes, then he pays trainer and team and manager fees, etc.

So he went through the 50 or so million in cash he was left with, I remember him betting six figures 7 days in a row for sporting events and losing, he probably bet 5 million dollars in two weeks and lost and only posted his winning bet.

Floyd has investments and a networth from other things he can sell property and pay off the tax but doesn't want to sell any of his assets, he just doesn't have the cash, he wants to pay after the McGregor fight when he gets cash.

Or when you get paid in sporadic huge chunks and invest it instead of sitting on the cash.

He can't be broke. That can't be true. Why doesn't he just pay? A few millions should be nothing for him.

Anyone that thinks hes broke is a fool, lol. This is a non-story, those taxes will be paid off soon. Floyd hires the best accountants and lawyers.

He's selling his fleet of cars. Bisping was told he'd lost a ridiculous sum of money from being scammed. There's definitely something to this.

I guess you don't follow boxing very much.

Best at lining their own pockets. I mean Floyd can't even read, I bet he would sign anything these trusted lawyers put in front of him.

He is obviously not broke, but I wouldn't be very surprised if the guy faces a liquidity crisis now and then. When you invest a large part of what you've got while at the same time spending money like a drunken sailor, you run into problems faster than you think. Much faster. The guy has probably (although I wouldn't bet on it) made enough money to never go broke like the older Mayweathers, but let's face it: The guy is not very bright. At all. And anyone who claims that he must be smart because of all the money he has made is equally stupid. The guy didn't make that money playing chess or running a hedge fund, now did he.

Also, he surrounds himself with dimwits and yes men, so I'm not too sure about the bunch of them being capable of knowing who "the best accountants and lawyers" are. I very much doubt it. And if it's true that he has recently be scammed out of a large sum of cash, that is no more than can be expected. The guy appears to be a Grade A idiot when it comes to money - like the vast majority of boxers. You can usually trust these people to fuck things up financially. And unlike Tyson, Floyd is unlikely to have a second career making money off of who he is. Outside of certain demographics, nobody who is not a boxing fan gives a shit about him. So if he does squander his money, he's pretty much done.

Anyone that pays 40 million for a damn watch probably deserves to go broke.

It'd be a lot more interesting (and funnier) if he went to prison for tax invasion or something.

Jonny depp and nic cage both had the best accountants and lawyers but both squandered their millions, Cage was similar to Floyd buying yachts, cars, planes, before going broke

The man runs through money like nothing, he claims he is limited in cash, so he ran through over 100 million in cash, he has money in the form of business investments, cars, property etc. but doesnt want to sell those to come up with the money to pay.

that 2015 is the year he made over 150 million for the Pacquiao fight.

he spend millions total in a month on gambling, dude bets six figures, and buys expensive cars, clothing, vacations spending 20k a night at high end hotels in euorpe, Mike Tyson was able to spend his 300 million money away buying cars, fur coats you name it.

I wonder what he invested in, if he invested in some type of business start ups or stocks don't they give you a certain time until you can sell? like a certain period before you can sell? maybe that is why he cant sell. I thought he had over 100 million in his bank account he showed his receipt to an ESPN reporter when he went to pick up 1 million in cash from the bank to throw at the strip club and to gamble with

Floyd needs Conor more than Conor needs Floyd.
Conor was right.

Floyd needs Conor more than Conor needs Floyd.
Conor was right.

Its why Floyd was chasing Conor so desperately.

If Floyd gambles and throws cash away like its going out of style. There is video of him making it rain and burning money in the club
