Each week club members will vote on a film to watch. Then the following week we'll discuss it. Anyone is welcome to join in the discussions. If you want to become a member then let me know.

  • Each Sunday night (6-10pm Hawaii time) I'll post two threads
  • One thread is the movie we've all voted on to watch
  • The other is the voting for the week after's film
  • Voting will end Thursday night, which gives everyone Friday, Saturday, and Sunday to watch the film to be discussed (but you can watch after that and chime in anytime during the week)
  • All members are eligible to vote
  • All members who commented on the current week's film are eligible to nominate for the next week's vote, so once you've commented you can PM me an IMDB link of your next nomination
  • If you don't want to watch the current film you can watch a previous film that you missed and after commenting on it you can submit a new nomination.
  • If you miss 3 consecutive weeks your votes won't count until you start contributing again
  • Multiple votes will be allowed each week (2 or 3 depending on the number of choices)
  • You'll be allowed to change your vote
  • You can vote for your own movie
  • You must cast your allotted number of votes
  • If it's a tie then the judges decide the tiebreaker (I'm the judges so don't leave it in the hands of the judges)
  • If after the initial signup period we are over 10 members then new members will be treated as pledges and will have to view and comment for a few weeks before they're allowed to nominate and vote
  • The first Sunday of each month will be a theme week. We'll go in order of the tag list to decide who gets to choose the theme

Now for the nominees. Members are allowed two votes each this week. Keep in mind the format here is open for feedback and future change.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986)

"A rough-and-tumble trucker and his side kick face off with an ancient sorcerer in a supernatural battle beneath Chinatown."

Why @Cubo de Sangre thinks we should watch it: Loved this one back in the day. So cheesy, but so much fun. Lot's of quotable lines. I think of this film when I call my dog "Wang".

DARK STAR (1974)

"In the far reaches of space, a small crew, 20 years into their solitary mission, find things beginning to go hilariously wrong."

Why @Dirt Road Soldier thinks we should watch it: Why? Because nobody else will since he has so many other great films, while this one is a forgotten gem of 70s schlock.

IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS (1994)

"An insurance investigator begins discovering that the impact a horror writer's books have on his fans is more than inspirational."

Why @MusterX thinks we should watch it: He didn't say.

VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED (1995)

"A small town's women give birth to unfriendly alien children posing as humans."

Why @Tufts thinks we should watch it: Coz blond creepy children....

ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13

"An unlikely partnership between a Highway Patrol Officer, two criminals and a station secretary is formed to defend a defunct Los Angeles precinct office against a siege by a bloodthirsty street gang."

917uL5dYbBL._SX342_.jpg

Why @Zer thinks we should watch it: Taking much inspiration from classic western Rio Bravo, Carpenter made this film about an isolated police station under siege by violent criminals. It's a fun action concept, but given a very dark atmosphere. It's a fine example of building tension and dread in a movie. Not too dissimilar from a zombie movie in terms of the hostile, hopeless environment it creates for its cast of characters. I also really love the performance of Darwin Joston as Napoleon Wilson, definitely up there with my favourite Carpenter characters.

STARMAN (1984)

"An alien takes the form of a young Wisconsin widow's husband and makes her drive him to his departure point in Arizona. Distrustful government agents, along with a more ambivalent scientist, give pursuit in hopes of intercepting them."

91C6irh7UzL._SY445_.jpg

Why @revoltub thinks we should watch it: An optimistic road trip rom com with Jeff Bridges being an alien and some heartfelt moments.

I love how I'm the ONLY person that voted for Dark Star.

Why @Dirt Road Soldier thinks we should watch it: Why? Because nobody else will since he has so many other great films, while this one is a forgotten gem of 70s schlock.

I'd rephrase the above as the below.

Why @Dirt Road Soldier thinks we should watch it: Why? Because nobody else will since this one is forgotten 70s schlock.

You ever see Schlock? I have. Back when I thought Attack of the Killer Tomatoes was somehow worth watching.

Same here for starman. But I'm excited to watch little china again. I think its gonna be a fun discussion.

It's a rare week where the club is so decisive. But with Carpenter, it's mostly clear which movies are his hits and which are the misses.

Fuck! Now @Cubo de Sangre is gonna start calling me Wang again.... Used to be Beautiful and Princess back in the day. Been downhill ever since. The dogs and cats still get sweet nicknames though...

I covered for you with the "Wang" story. Now you blew it.

The dogs and cats get called lots of shit you'd object to, they just don't complain.
