Fact that he made men or got rid of non-combatant wimps years ago, but no longer.

Millie makes sure all recruits are protected and kept safe if wearing Pampers.

Yeah pretty much. His role was spot on. Boot camp was both one of the funnest and at the same time most frustrating times. The DIs really turn it to the next level.
Way Way Way (not enough Ways) Different now.
Drill Instructors are No Longer Permitted to even yell at a recruit OR "disrespect" anyone. Their Rank, pay, and future employment depends on them being Fully Politically Correct - No Matter how weak, disruptive, or antagonistic a recruit is.

That’s scary stuff.

That’s scary stuff.
It's So Far Past scary...a good friend, former badass Airborne Infantryman, saw a new recruit that had been a phukkup for 2 solid weeks, talk back to his DI while in formation Wearing a F'n ball cap! The Drill Instructor stepped to correct his behavior and flipped his hat off using 2 fingers - Never even touched the smart mouth recruit.

The DI, the same Day, lost his Rank, demoted with pay cut, was no longer a DI.

Welcome to cross dresser Millie's Army. Helluva way to prep soldiers to defend their fellow soldiers, much less their Country.

My family is full of every branch of the military, the majority are Marines.

Those family members whom are Marines watch this movie religiously like once or twice a month.

I’ve also noticed that they really only watch the first half the the movie regarding the boot camp experience…after that I find that they could care less to watch the rest of the film.

Totally nostalgic for them, and most of them have been out of service for 15-20 years now..

It’s the brotherhood and camaraderie

I was never in the military and wasn't even born yet when this movie takes place but I have uncles who were marines in this era and they said that this character was not far off of their experience in boot camp.

Was in from 04-08. His DI “acting” wasn’t acting at all. He was there as a consultant and Kubrick liked him so much he gave him the role. That was a pretty accurate depiction of boot camp. I was never choked by my DI or anything like that. I’m sure that went on during that time though.

The other stuff was perfect. I remember an exact scenario where a recruit stole an apple from the chow hall and we all got punished for it. The jelly donut would’ve been funnier, but they didn’t even allow that when I went through. We had to take a dessert if it was offered in the chow line, but we weren’t allowed to eat it and had to throw it away after the guide was done eating.

Yep. I can’t relate to the latter part of the movie as I wasn’t in Vietnam. But the fire team hierarchy in war time was pretty accurate.

I watched it for the first time when I was in 6th grade. My buddy was like "Bro there's this craaaaazy movie about war and stuff, it's badass!"

This was before smartphones and the internet so the only place to hear profanity like that was in cable movies.

I was like

I happened across this programme about how they train drill instructors once, thought it was interesting.

R. Lee Ermey legendary performance, pretty much is the reason to watch Full Metal Jacket.

Here's the thing that most people get.
R Lee Ermy plays a D.I. that forms that platoon into Marines, and it was real because there was no acting involved. He was a former Marine D.I.

In 2004, in Ft. Knox KY, 15 years after that movie released I can testify Army Drill Sergeants made R Lee Ermy look like a 2nd grade school teacher.
They've graduated far beyond insults, they're experienced in psychological warfare to weed out the weak.

I can't testify how much tougher Marines D.I.s got in the 'War On Terror' era, but I can say when I stationed in Ft.Irwin CA I received orders to pick up an Army soldier who attempted suicide from Balboa in San Diego CA, the Psych warden in a Naval hospital. 3/4th of the patients there were Marines, and half of them hadn't even graduated Basic Training.

So, the best advice I've give to someone considering joining the military and isn't a masochist.... go Air Force.
