I have a question, I stopped using that horrible dextrose due to fear of causing diabetes.
What effects does maltodextrin have on your body?
I wish to use maltodextrin as a gainer mixed with pure whey powder. Something like 1 part protein pulver and 1

I was told by a bud that your body stops producing insulin if you use too much of it.
 
That's true for any carbohydrate that spikes insulin.


You got some bad advice, there is nothing wrong with Dextrose. You should be going for a 1:1:1 ratio of protein:maltodextrin:dextrose.
 
Your buddy is partially right.

The idea is to avoid high-GI carbs during most of the day. But around the workout window, your body is equipped to handle these kind of carbs. In fact, it craves them. Maltodextrin is a bit lower in GI, but not much. They're both extremely high GI.

If you want to gain weight, you're going to need them to manipulate your insulin flux.

And one last thing. Millions of people have eaten a diet composed largely of high-GI carbs but didn't develop diabetes simply because they didn't eat too much. You have to abuse your system with this again and again. Although it is a consequences and not a cause, obesity is a stop on the railway to diabetes.
 
Speaking of high GI carbs, I placed a $200+ order w/ TrueProtein on Friday, so I'll be getting 4 free pounds of waxy maize starch w/ it. People on other boards have been raving about it, but I can't imagine how it could be that far superior to dextrose/malto. Anyhow, I'll give it a try and report back if it turns me superhuman.
 
The entire sugar/simpe carb thing i find is rather interesitng

I found it kinda funny looking at the lable of some BSN products, they advertise that they have no sugar in them. I know alot of guys that buy products based on the sugar content, they'll avoid it if at all possible.

BSN uses Maltodextrin instead which is an extremly high GI carb but its actually classified as a complex carb, all be it with very weak bonds that are almost instantly broken down, but the average person probably doesn't know that.
 
Maltodextrin and whey is a FANTASTIC combo for post workout. It's also great pre and during workout, but post is most important. I'd fix your ratio a bit though; 2 to 1, maltodextrin to whey.

It's not going to give you diabetes. Unless you consume an absurd amount of sugar otherwise or have a strong history of type 2 diabetes in your family you should be fine.

I would NOT use this on non-workout days -- it'll just make you fat. The point of the maltrodextrin is to cause an insulin spike which will shuttle the protein into your muscles to repair them. Plus the sugar will refill the glycogen stores that were depleted during exercise. If you drink this when you're not working out you're going to get an insulin spike but your muscles are not going to be in immediate need of protein or glycogen. And given that this is a fast acting protein like whey (unlike casein) and a simple sugar like maltodextrin, your body, with no urgent energy or repair demands, will most likely store it as fat.

Now that I know how high glycemic Maltodextrin is, I've noticed that as well. I'll see a product and look to see if it's chock full of sugar and it will say 0 or 1/2 grams but then the main ingrediant is Maltodextrin.
