Hey guys, the ship I'm currently working on has a boxing bag and some gloves in the gym. I'm a bjj practitioner but looking to start boxing when I get home. Can I get some tips on how to train myself in basic boxing whilst I'm here? I know how to jab and that's pretty much it, I'm making up the other things I do lol, any help is appreciated

Before you even start punching you need to get your footwork in order. Work on your boxing stance, moving back and forth, angles, and circles. Then focus on being able to twist/rotate/extend your hips properly which makes punching a whole lot easier to learn after that. Without a proper base of boxing footwork, you'll be spinning your wheels trying to punch.

You'll need some formal training otherwise you are just hard-wiring real bad habits into what you hope will be sound technique. Once you get a set of educated eyes watching how well/poor you move you can practice at home.

Don't stress yourself with tryng power shots, just work on the jab, not a massive Paul Malignaggi fan but he explains it well here, the jab and different variations of it.

Don't forget a nice sidestep to create space for the body shot

Find someone that actually is a boxer or a trainer and pay for his meals in trade for him to watch and correct your form on how to punch correctly. Hopefully he's not a muscley meathead brawler but a regular looking or skinny guy who boxes smartly and pays attention to technique.

That's your only hope, really.

I used to learn how to play basketball by watching Michael Jordan play and imitate him. So do the same for boxing. Watch your favorite boxer and imitate them. There's a shit ton of vids on youtube.

Hit the bag and have fun. Try to keep one hand up at eye level when you punch with the other and bring all your punches straight back to your head. Don't lean forward when you hit.

When you get home, find a boxing gym and learn the sweet science
