I train in Shidokan karate and have competed in boxing and full contact karate. I no longer compete and cannot kick well too boot. I am retired so age is a factor. I love my gym but it is too far away. It was close when I worked. Due to distance and time it takes to drive, I only train on average 1-2 times a week. I want to train 3-5 times a week There is a Krav Magna school within walking distance from my house. I have read that some schools are good and some are a joke. I want to train for fitness and self defense.

School is affiliated with Krav Magna Academy with headquarters in Israel. I signed up for an introductory lesson. My goal is self defense and fitness. What should I look for in this lesson to know it is a legitimate school?? Thanks in advance for all replies.

If you already train, you should instinctively pick that up within 15 minutes of walking in..

If you’ve aged out of training hard then I’d be very, very careful. I’ve known Krav to be pretty rough on it’s students

Hey Doctor Taco, I have a daughter who lives in Portland Oregon. You are right about that City in your bio but not sure if you meant the state. Good food is the only thing I can say good about Portland, Oregon. However, she refuses to move.

Buy a heavy bag and just do bag work to stay in shape

With your background you will be the top dog without even training. You have imo more results doing shadowboxing and bagwork by yourself. Your technical skills are on annother planet regarding 99% of KM schools.

I would just invite a friend once a month for friendly sparring I mean its just for fun right.

And for fitness I would also not advise as they dont train intelligent and with your age you are safer just doing your stuff. Injury prevention should be goal number one like rotator training, stretching, dynamic mid speed exercises..ec I know several people having ruined their body when older by training with brutes or doing stupid drills.

I still love the city for what it was 10+ years ago and hope for its future to return to what it was when I was a young man

Well, initially you should know about Kraw roots.
It was streetfight done by ppl with exp in wrestling and boxing...
Dirtywrestle + dirtybox, a bit later added old (!) judo, JJJ etc...
Later ofc most likely some stuff from MT and Karate etc...

Btw even judo does have some kicks and punches....not alone JJJ.

___

Imho an instructor should have compet experience in some combat art uder belt ( full contact things ) and better also if there will be experience in training / job related to SD applications....

Like with TMA's IMHO real red flags might be:
If instructor is against cross training.....and to spar with guys in other gyms.....

Like tell him: I'm interested, how do you think, might I cross train in boxing, KB, MT, wrestling gym?
Guys does have sparring ...

If he will be against this.....then......

KM like real JJJ is damn brutal stuff.
So not all things can be used in sparring ....
While some part IMHO yeah....

Some KM instructors are sparring with full under other rules and might have compet etc exp in other arts under belt and agree to do such sparrings etc.....

Some are.... death art...death art..deadly....talks.....

In basic it will be like H2H stuff....
More like this.

If can't kick?
Learn low kicks, foot sweeps, opponent's disbalancing...

Like someone already said, if you already fought boxing and full contact karate, just hang a bag at home. Krav maga in the US, like many martial arts in the US, sadly have been turned into BS. Krav maga here is typical soccer mom boxercise with a new name. Now if you're looking to meet some soccer mom's, it might be worth joining.

From what I have been able to find, the only legit krav maga instructor in the US is this guy.

Lol, sorry couldn't resist, in all seriousness if your into krav maga style training, I'd look to get into weapon/guns
