So I've been rolling exclusively in the gi for the past 6 months, 2-4 times per week and I've developed callus on the front of the knuckles closest to my fingernails.

The problem with this is added friction from the gi... last night at some point someone broke one of my grips and I left a knuckle behind in their gi. It didn't hurt at the time but when I washed up after class the hand sanitizer let me know there was a hole in my finger.

Do other people have callus like this? I would think it's common but I haven't seen anything about it before. Is there anything you can do to prevent them from getting ripped off?

Very common, wear them with pride!

You'll miss them if come back to grappling after a long time off. I missed 4 months of training this year and I literally went soft. My once sturdy big toe calluses still looked the part but after an hour of grappling, my big toes were literally skinned! So yeah, calluses don't look pretty but it's how your body protects itself from all that friction and damage.

I got them too. I think they're awesome! I can always tell how good my grips are getting by how red my knuckles are getting. LOL! :icon_chee

I was at a wedding once and some guy came up to me and said "what do you train?" out of no where. I asked him how he could tell and he said "I saw your knuckles in the church. I figured you were either a fighter or a mechanic."

Wear it with pride.

Mine have been softening up (I haven't done enough grappling lately) but yes, I have those very same calluses. Enjoy them!

They stop bleeding after a while.

Just had my first ever bjj class, and was wondering why my knuckle was so sore. This thread answers my question. But is it basically just mat burn?

Also, my partner was grabbing my gi on my right bicep repeatedly, but was also pinching my skin every time until my arm now looks like this:

Is this fairly normal? It hurt like a bastard at the time, but I didn't want to complain.

^My God....that's harsh man. Everyone has been "gi pinched" but that is a whole 'nother level. I know some people bruise easier than others but still....

Where you wearing a rash guard? I find it minimizes pinching because it is hard to grip through the gi, the rashguard AND the skin.

Thats cool. Eventually your body gets used to it and you get much smaller amount of spot bruising like that.

My gym has some pretty harsh mats, and I'm actually starting to get calluses on my shoulders from shrimping.

Sounds kinda lame but you can file down your calluses to the point where there is still dead skin to protect you, but it doesn't protrude and get caught on stuff. When I used to rock climb I knew a couple guys who did this (although their calluses were on their palms and fingers).

Nope, just a sleeveless t-shirt, so yeah it was just the gi then my skin. I'll have to look into getting one. Thanks, man.

Oh good, I hope so.

Haha, a friend of mine started training and told me he was getting them on his hands after only a week of training, I having trained for a fews years never getting them or seeing anyone with them just assumed that he was being a spazz and gripping for dear life.

Looks like its a common problem for some, I guess i owe him an apology.
