Kevin Rooney coaching Mike Tyson on the heavybag

Does anyone know what exactly cus and Kevin Rooney’s roles were specifically? Seems like Rooney was the mitt man but worked a ton on his weird form of movement and headmovement. Does cus normally get all the credit?

Edit: I guess he was cus student who took over after he died

cus adopted mike, he was a father more than anything to him. He was his coach, but as a old man he was not physically capable of mittwork etc. only sharing the knowledge in his brain. Rooney was the "body" cus was the mind. I would suggest studying cus d'amato, it can help with the mental aspects of fighting for sure. Studying both mike and cus I feel helped me. Cus pretty much uses character as "heart". He was a great coach.

Kevin Rooney was more than that. Cus d'Amato never cornered Tyson for a fight, whether it was amateur or pro. It was always Rooney. He was basically a younger version of Cus and did everything Cus did and then some. Cus' death had no impact on Tyson's boxing career (Cus died in 1985, Mike won his first title in 1986) because Rooney was still there to take care of business. It's only after he fired Rooney in 1988 that Tyson started to decline.

He used to be so disciplined in his early years. It's hard to see how he could've been beaten back then. Who knows, it was fun to watch

Cus was a father to Tyson, losing cus had the impact of Losing a father, Tyson to this day will cry when speaking of cus. Cus was the brains, Rooney was the body. Cus was too old to be a padman etc. Cus made Tyson. He just couldn't do the physical work. Everything with cus was mental. Check out reemus boxing and the philosophers mind set. Cus advice helped me mentally prepare for my fights in the same manner it helped Tyson. I think very highly of him. He touched on the aspects of fighting no one does. The mental and the fear. Dudes words spoke to me beyond the grave.

I would like to be the cus d'amato of muay thai.

There's a great book "Iron Ambition", about Constantino, but from Mike's perspective. Nice in-depth on d'Amato personality and style of teaching.
