As of Jan. 2010, Judo rules have changed. Among all the changes, you are not allowed to grab the trousers. I was wondering if I'd be allowed to throw kata-guruma if i didn't touch the legs?

Thanks

kata guruma is not banned.

there are kata guruma variations without leg grabs.

also try to use kata guruma as a follow up attack (your first attempt must be a genuine attack) not as your primary.

I'm not sure about the current change in Judo rules, but I'm not sure how you are going too pull off a Kata Guruma without touching the legs either, but it could be me... I guess you could grab the belt as a variation?

As long as you don't grab the legs you can do kata-guruma. Harder, though...

Yeah, but I've yet to see a kata guruma without grabbing the legs that had much kata or guruma in it, haha.

Do the new rules specifically state that you can't grab the trousers, or that you can't grab the leg? Because if it is just the trousers then you can still do kata guruma wrestling style by sort of holding the leg with your arm. I had thought that the rules specifically prohibited any kind of leg grab though, unless it is a counter/combination.

one of my senseis adapted to the rules, basically he take the rear hand and pull in down between uke's legs and perform the kata guruma like that, much harder but there are ways to work around the rules.

as previously stated, as long as it is used as a secondary attack you can still use it. example ouchi gari to kata guruma/ morote gari

that hardly looks like a variation of kata guruma. If anything that looks like a modified ippon seio nage. I thought the dropping-to-knees to throw is also illegal now or am I wrong about that part? Many dojos around here still practice them

Similar in style to a Seoi Nage, but you still have the wheeling action over the shoulder:

a 100% Kata Guruma where instead of touching the person's leg, they are touching their own legs:

More of a Yoko Otoshi, but you still have a wheeling action over your shoulders

Dropping to the knees is still legal, thanks god. Uki Waza with the hand between the legs but not grabbing is still legal, I believe.

I see what you did there.

Dealing with the ban on kata guruma by not doing kata guruma.

Good post by unhommefou, the flores video is nice.

Anybody know if you can still pull that off if uke maintains his lapel grip?

If the opponent "wheels" across the shoulders its kata guruma.

I seriously question whether or not you really understand the fundamental principles of kuruma.

Having said that, I have taught the 3rd technique for quite some time. It's a good follow up if your opponent is significantly strong than you and tries to power out of your 2 on 1.
