Can anyone give me an idea of how a Karate Belt compares to a Jiu Jitsu belt?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I didn't know there was a difference. So i guess I'm really no help at all.

Most TMA belts are thinner, and more cheaply made. Cheaper material, less of it, and comparatively poorly constructed.

BJJ/Judo belts tend to be thicker, a lot sturdier, and generally better made.

It's not necessarily that a BJJ/Judo belt is better than a TMA belt, as that's a relative term. They are more suited for grappling arts, and the greater tensions put on them. Wouldn't really be of any benefit to wear a BJJ belt in a TKD class.

Hope this helps.

Yes, very helpful. Would a TMA belt work for Jiu Jitsu? I'm assuming so, but it would just not be as sturdy?

Yeah, it would work just fine. I actually wear a TMA belt for BJJ, randomly enough. They wear out faster, but I've had my current TMA belt for more than a year now without any real problem. Doesn't bother me in the slightest, and no one else has ever commented on it.

A lot of the belts made strictly for jiu jitsu also have that area made for stripes....it's either a black or red depending on if you're a competitor or instructor. It's not necessary, but this is something I've only seen on BJJ belts.
