Director Doug Liman Exits JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK; Andy Muschietti Eyed to Direct

DnIjmwF.jpg

Doug Liman is no longer set to explore the DC Extended Universe's dark side.

The director has left Justice League Dark, Warner Bros.' supernatural adventure project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Warner Bros. is now looking out for directors to step in, and Mama and It director Andy Muschietti is among them.

Liman was attached to both Justice League Dark and the Daisy Ridley post-apocalyptic drama Chaos Walking for Lionsgate, which was officially greenlit this month. He joined Dark in August 2016 after leaving Fox's X-Men spinoff Gambit. Previously, Guillermo del Toro was attached to Dark for several years.

Michael Gilio is scripting the project, with Scott Rudin producing.

In the DC Comics, Dark teams heroes such as John Constantine, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, Zatanna and Swamp Thing. The series was first announced in 2011, making it a relatively new addition to the DC mythos.

Liman's Aaron Taylor-Johnson war drama The Wall debuted this month, and next the director has the Tom Cruise feature American Made due out in September.

Doug Liman to Direct JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK, No Longer Directing GAMBIT

TZz6nTD.jpg

Warner Bros is tapping Doug Liman to direct Justice League Dark, breathing new life into its supernatural adventure project.

Dark was a fairly recent DC title that grouped together heroes such as John Constantine (who was the title character of a solo 2005 movie that starred Keanu Reeves), Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, Zatanna and Swamp Thing (who has his own Wes Craven-directed pic in 1982), among others.

The project was in development for several years as a directing vehicle for Guillermo del Toro, a master of the macabre who tastes seemingly lined up with the material.

Liman’s boarding signals a tonal shift for the project. Liman is known for his kinetic and propulsive action movie sensibilities thanks to his hits such as The Bourne Identity and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. He worked with Warners on 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow, the well-reviewed and well-regarded sci-fi time travel movie that starred Tom Cruise.

Liman is shaking it up with his next several movies, which include American Made, a 1980s drug cartel crime drama that reteams him with Cruise, and The Wall, a low-budget sniper drama for Amazon Studios.

Michael Gilio is writing the script for Dark. Del Toro is no longer involved but Scott Rudin is now a producer on it.

First Trailer for JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Animated Movie

c8TaFlv.jpg

Warner Bros. Animation’s next movie in line is finally going to give fans something they’ve wanted for a while, whether live-action or otherwise: the Justice League Dark in action. And now, we have a first look. The footage has hit the web in the wake of The Killing Joke’s home release, including a trailer and a brief behind-the-scenes look at the film.

The featurette confirms, unsurprisingly, that the line-up of the main team in the film will feature John Constantine (who will indeed be voiced by Matt Ryan, who played Constantine in the short lived NBC live-action show), Black Orchid, Etrigan, Zatanna, Deadman, and Swamp Thing.

The usual Justice League will also appear—Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and Green Lantern all make brief appearances in the footage above—as supporting characters, when the supernatural heroes are called in to handle mysteriously magical things going bump in the dark. Batman in particular will play a large role as the audience’s introduction to the world of DC’s magical characters, and a skeptical foil to the team. Justice League Dark will release later this year.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Revealed to Be the Next DC Animated Film

vdYoNiv.jpg

Following in the footsteps of DC Entertainment’s animated recreation of the iconic The Killing Joke storyline, the company is taking on one of their lesser known properties for their next endeavor.

While it hasn’t been officially announced, we now know that their next animated film will be Justice League Dark, via the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) website. In their listing for Batman: The Killing Joke, the additional material section includes “A Sneak Peak at Justice League Dark”.

Justice League Dark was introduced as part of DC’s New 52 initiative and featured a roster comprised of John Constantine, Zatanna, Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Enchantress, and Shade the Changing Man. The team was meant to be a Justice League-like group that focused on supernatural and magical threats, but it wasn’t actually related to the league in any way. In fact, they really don’t want to be a team at all, but they end up grouping together for the greater good.

The Assault on Arkham animated film, featuring the Suicide Squad, is believed by many to have been a "test" for the viability of their live-action movie, announced shortly thereafter. Could the same happen to Justice League Dark?

Colin Farrell, Ewan McGregor, Monica Bellucci, Ron Perlman Eyed for JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

W9PVeud.jpg

The last time we heard about Justice League Dark (a.k.a. Dark Universe), Guillermo Del Toro had left the project. However, Warner Bros was excited enough about his script - not to mention the way the anti-hero team-up entry Suicide Squad is being received - to make it a priority.

Scott Rudin reportedly boarded the project as a producer to get it in shape to shoot sometime next year. The Del Toro version of the team, according to the man himself, is Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan The Demon. It's possible that the movie might add in a Cara Delevingne cameo as Enchantress and DC's New 52 version of the team included Madame Xanadu.

The lead characters aren't cast, though Latino Review has heard Warner Bros is close on a few of the roles. Guillermo del Toro wanted Ron Perlman to play Swamp Thing and thus far everyone seems to agree that's still a good idea.

The studio disagreed with del Toro's choice to play John Constantine and is seeking A-List talent. Right now the frontrunner for the part looks like Colin Farrell, who is currently shooting Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them with the studio. However, Ewan McGregor has also been approached for the same part. It's possible that the one that doesn't get the role of John Constantine could fall back to Jason Blood, the human side of Etrigan.

For Deadman, Warner Bros is looking for a comedic presence and for Zatanna, they're still searching for hispanic/black actress to fill the role. Right now Monica Belluci looks like the top choice to play magic user Madame Xanadu.

JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Gets a Producer, Possibly Filming in 2016

oiO02p6.jpg

Despite the departure of Guillermo Del Toro, it’s now apparent that the Justice League Dark adaptation, otherwise known as Dark Universe, is moving forward under the guide of Scott Rudin. Del Toro is still staying on as a producer, though he’ll no longer direct.

Tracking Board's sources confirm that Rudin is moving quickly on this one, making updates to the script and approaching directors. The project is now a priority for Warner Bros., with sources also reporting that the studio is looking to shoot the superhero team-up film in 2016. Niija Kuykendall, Nik Mavinkurve, and Jon Berg are overseeing for Warner.

While the film’s plot has generally been kept under lock and key, Tracking Board is hearing that it involves a series of ancient tomes stolen by a madman hellbent on the destruction of humanity. When he learns of this, occult detective John Constantine seeks out a group of heroes that specialize in the mystic and arcane in order to save the world. Though the film’s heroes have not yet been announced, save for Constantine, Del Toro had mentioned that Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan The Demon will likely make up the team.

Rudin is a prolific producer who’s known for consistently working on a library of titles. Rudin’s latest project, Steve Jobs, opens wide this weekend. He recently wrapped on Ben Stiller’s comedy sequel Zoolander 2 and is next starting on The Legacy of a Whitetail Deer Hunter, which stars Josh Brolin and Danny McBride.

Guillermo del Toro Left JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK to Direct PACIFIC RIM 2

e3vknUP.jpg

Since 2013, Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pacific Rim) has been developing Justice League Dark movie for Warner Bros. Del Toro even brought on a (still unnamed) screenwriter and delivered a finished first draft of the script to the studio executives in December.

Del Toro has now revealed that Warner Bros. loved the Justice League Dark script, but they wanted the filmmaker to get to work on it around November of this year, which is the same time he begins filming the Pacific Rim sequel for Legendary.

"Warners liked the script, they were very enthusiastic and wanted to green-light it but they wanted it to coincide with the shoot of Pacific Rim 2," del toro told Daily Beast. "I was put in a very difficult place facing a difficult choice, and I chose to do Pacific Rim 2."

Legendary told Del Toro they might throw down for Hellboy 3 if he makes his next film, Pacific Rim 2, a hit. Del Toro expects Hellboy 3 to cost $120 million and with a sizable like that he confessed to Daily Beast that "nobody knocking down our doors to give it to us." He added with a chuckle, "It's a little beyond Kickstarter. It would be great to complete the trilogy. But in a way I don't see the world...the industry...supporting that idea."

Guillermo del Toro No Longer Directing JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

HnX6jiA.jpg

Guillermo del Toro turns off the lights on Justice League Dark. Earlier today, word came down that Warner Bros. is reshuffling their DC Vertigo Imprint comic book movie projects to their sister company New Line. Within The Hollywood Reporter's report, they reveal that director Guillermo del Toro is no longer developing Justice League Dark.

According to their inside sources "the filmmaker, who is working on a sequel to Pacific Rim even as he preps his gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, is no longer attached to the project."

The script was completed in November and read by Warner Bros. executives in December. We didn't hear anything else on the project until April. That is when del Toro told IGN that his schedule was extremely busy and wasn't sure if he'd be able to slot it in anytime soon. He did add that Justice League Dark would happen with or without him.

Sandman and Other Vertigo Films to Be Handled By New Line

Lwxkq4B.jpg

Sandman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt's adaptation of the acclaimed 1990s Neil Gaiman comic book series, is leaving Warner Bros. It's not traveling far, however, only being segued off to Warners' sister arm New Line.

The move is part of a larger reshuffling of the deck between DC Comics and its edgy imprint Vertigo. DC projects, those involving the four-color heroes such as Batman and Wonder Woman and Flash, and are - or could be - part of an interconnected cinematic release, will remain in the Warner fold.

Vertigo titles, which are more creator driven and tend to push the envelope in terms of boundaries and content, will now look to be adapted by New Line. There are some exceptions. Shazam, which has been in development at New Line with Dwayne Johnson attached to star, remains at New Line.

Justice League Dark, which is also known as Dark Universe, will remain under the Warners banner. Dark consists of DC's supernatural heroes such as Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna, and Deadman among others. In the past, Constantine and Swamp Thing and some of those ilk had their own titles published under the Vertigo imprint but have since been integrated into the DC Universe. The movie version will attempt the same.

Dark, the adaptation, was to have been directed by Guillermo del Toro, but insiders say the filmmaker, who is working on a sequel to Pacific Rim even as he preps his gothic horror movie Crimson Peak, is no longer attached to the project.

Rumor: Lineup for Guillermo del Toro's JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK

SjVfEUn.jpg

Though his long-gestating Justice League Dark has yet to materialize into a green-lit project, director Guillmero del Toro already knows which denizens of the Dark DC Universe he'll enlist for the eventual film. In an interview with Collider, del Toro said he plans to use Swamp Thing, Etrigan, Deadman and Zatana for the team's roster.

Latino Review's El Mayimbe also tweeted that John Constantine is rumored to be in the team as well. Constantine and Deadman have been mentioned by Del Toro several times in the past and were all but guaranteed to be on the roster, while fan-favorite Zatanna was also expected. Jason Blood (aka Etrigan the Demon) is probably the closest thing to a surprise on the list.

But perhaps most shocking are the characters that are absent. There were high hopes that the likes of Swamp Thing and Spectre would make the cut. Of course that's just the starting lineup, and more may join the ranks as the story progresses.

Along with revealing the supposed roster, del Toro said that Justice League Dark is "a very different universe." This seems to further substantiate the remarks that the DC films outside of the primary Justice League purview would exist in their own isolated universes. Supposedly, those films would be part of a "Vertigo"-like slate of standalone films, produced by Warner Bros. subsidiary New Line Cinemas.

Guillermo del Toro's JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK Script is Complete

cjLp5TX.jpg

Guillermo del Toro's Dark Universe just took a big leap forward. Today, the completed screenplay for Dark Universe officially went to weekend reads at Warner Bros. The studio's reactions to the script will be coming back in a few days, and the film could take another step toward production if Warner has a favorable opinion of what they see on the page.

The director confirmed the script's completion and status while Forbes chatted with him about his FX horror series The Strain.

The director is currently in post production on Crimson Peak and will soon go into production on Pacific Rim 2, for a April 2017 release date. Del Toro does tend to finish films early but, if he was to direct this movie - and you'd imagine he'd like to - he couldn't do it until late 2016. Which means we won't see Justice League Dark until 2018 at the earliest.

Guillermo del Toro Talks DARK UNIVERSE, Adds Floronic Man to Roster

RHi5yep.jpg

The strangeness of Warner Bros. trying to put together their superhero proprieties is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that Dark Universe might hit the big screen before Justice League. The project might eventually be titled "Justice League Dark" and it will be a band of DC Comics anti-heroes rather than the mainstream superheroes. In a recent interview at WonderCon, del Toro talks about Dark Universe, his reveal of another character on the team, his personal attachment to the material, the status of screenplay:

"The route we're going is Constantine is our lead. Constantine is the guy who leads us in and out of the plot. We have Swamp Thing, Etrigan, we have Zatanna, we have...I will spoil it, the Floronic Man. We have stuff that those who love the darker side of the DC Universe are going to appreciate, and we're trying to be true to the origins of the characters."

"I'm literally playing with two of my oldest and most favorite characters in my life - Swamp Thing and Etrigan. These were the guys I was drawing with crayons when I was a kid. I cannot tell you how happy I am, but I am finishing my bible, and then I deliver that bible, which is about 45 pages, to Warners, and we have a screenwriter that we like and that we talk to, but he is writing his own movie right now and is thinking about it. But I am going to try to wait for him."

"I won't say who [the screenwriter] is. I'm not allowed. But we're waiting, and when the right time comes, hopefully that writer will take over, and then we'll see if it's directed by me or someone else and I'll just produce. I don't know."

Guillermo del Toro Planning DC Supernatural Team-Up Movie

nl4nlYw.jpg

According to a rumor coming out of Latino Review's El Mayimbe, Hellboy and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro is in negotiations with Warner Brothers to direct a film that, at least as it's described, sounds quite a bit like a Justice League Dark movie, even if there's no indication that it will be titled as such. Actually reportedly titled Heaven Sent, the DC Comics movie will reportedly star Swamp Thing, Hellblazer, The Spectre and more.

According to the report del Toro does want to do his own version of the Avengers, just supernaturally. Called Heaven Sent, he is combining all the magical beings from DC Comics in one epic adventure. Deadman, The Spectre, Swamp Thing, Constantine Hellblazer, Phantom Stranger, Zatanna, Zatara, and Sargon as well as Etrigan the Demon will team up. Now this one is a ways away, but Warner's lawyers have been working every night trying to clear the rights to all these characters."

Why would they need to clear the rights, when Warner has owned DC free and clear for a number of years? Well, around the same time they were shopping around Arrow and the Booster Gold series that Syfy is developing, Warner Brothers and DC Entertainment optioned the rights to The Spectre to Fox for TV and The CW was looking into making something out of Deadman.

Note: The original Justice League Dark is inaccessible as of the moment due to some technical issues.

David Fincher, please.
(that is all)

Farrell, McGregor and Perlman are great choices. I can easily see what a terrific fit Farrell would be as Constantine after seeing Matt Ryan's TV version.

Would prefer someone younger for Madame Xanadu.

Perlman all day everyday! who could he play tho, Etrigan?

Farrell would make a great Constantine but I'd prefer a blonde.

voice over? I don't think they'll go special effects makeup like Wes did the 80s, probably CGI route? Then again I look at Killer Croc from suicide squad so I dunno

Probably a mix of both CGI and makeup. It's hard to speculate though.

Perlman all day everyday! who could he play tho, Etrigan?

According to the report, they're eyeing Perlman as Swamp Thing. Not a bad plan since the makeup and prosthetic will hide his age and the role doesn't require extensive physical activities like running, jumping, etc. Mo-cap most likely.

Btw, my inside source is telling Ronda is circling the Zatanna role.

I guess Etrigan would have to be the same, with his mystical powers

I guess I envision Swamp Thing to have more fusion with Earth sort of like a walking tree never losing physical touch with nature even in urban areas

Impossible, Zatanna is an elite here ala Holm, Captain Marvel is more of Rousey's speed
