Just rewatched Weidman vs Rockhold

I thought Luke was starting to fade badly before Weidman thought it would be prudent to bust out his Vitor Belfort imitation.

For years there has been the perception that Weidman lost the fight right after the spinning back kick and got finished as a result. I guess people just don't remember it well. He got taken down after the kick and for 2 mins Luke had top control landing hard GNP. But the round ended and Luke didn't finish him till like 3 mins into the next round.

At 9:07 you see the start of the 2nd round and Rockhold counters and knocks Weidman to the ground. At this moment you can see where Rockhold actually knees Weidman while he was a downed opponent to the head. Fight should be overturned and Weidman should be given his belt back.

Rockhold was a physically large MW he towered some of these other fighters back then. I remember Rockhold making Machida look small

Apparently Weidman came in the fight super light, like we was already 190 pounds fight week and I remember someone making the comment the he could have made 170 that night. Rockhold was ginormous and it neutralizes the TDs of Weidman.

Luke became a legend after he tried to make a name off Platinum Mike

Yea it's not so much that it was super close. Ita just that Luke was as gassed as it possibly gets before Weidmans dumb mistake

It was a competitive fight

The only reason it looked competitive was because Luke gave The Chris too much respect. He also preserved his energy and didn’t go all in for the finish. The Chris is honestly overrated, them Strikeforce guys had more talent

What I remember the most is how much UFC (at the time) wanted Weidman to win, because for them he would have been the perfect "all American" poster boy to have has a champ. Knowing this, it was not surprising when Herb Dean (famous for his early stoppages) didn't behave as usual and let Weidman take an enormous amount of punishment from G&P. Shit was almost difficult to watch because of the mass of damage raining on this face, in any other occasion the fight would have been stopped much, much earlier. I believe also that the damage from that fight broke him: after that defeat he would go 2 wins and 5 losses.

Yea that loss and beating really destroyed that hype around him.

If herb stops it 45 seconds earlier you never know how Weidman comes back from it but fuck every punch felt like it was taking months of weidmans career...

It's crazy how the horrible stoppage in weidman vs Munoz gets relived and Chris takes the punishment, followed up by the broken leg.
