Does anyone know any good judo or sambo places in nyc (and the price of them)

I'm torn between Judo and Sambo so I want to weigh out my options. Originally, I wanted to wrestle in manhattan but couldn't find any places (I'm in college so places like bts aren't for me, as they serve only highschool and younger).

I'm considering biwako judo club but know very little about it- I just know that it's cheap so I'd like to hear your thoughts on it, if you have any at all

Go for sambo, with some judo on the side eventually...since its not expensive.

Google asa and new york combat sambo... Should get results

;)

thanks guys, I'm looking at the site right now

has anyone trained there? how tough are the practices? how good is he as a teacher? the location is great since I take the lirr and the gym doesn't seem too far from penn station

Oishi Judo is great but pricey (Oishi is hilarious, he's like real life version of Pat Morita from the karate kid). Sambo should be alot cheaper as it's less known by people in general. I would check out some classes, I bet they're pretty intense.

how much is it? and I hope sambo is cheaper lol

Do both if you can, both have positives and negatives.

spartak judo. its mainly russian folks though. i think if you a younger guy, there are some olympians or junior olympians you can work with but if you are really new. you gonna have work with younger teenagers but don't let that fool you. some of the younger kids are heavyweight and they are quite beastly.

If you want exsposure to both Judo & Sambo, Spartak is a good choice. One of their instructors used to teach judo at 5 points Muay Thai. That being said here are other choices available.

sambocenter.com in Brooklyn
ITC in Long Island City
Brigton beach Judo (primarily Judo but familiar with Sambo rules).

Even with this brief list these clubs have had Sambo experience or have sent some guys FIAS events.

Even the Judo club i go to out in NJ some of the kids when they went to train Judo in St. Petersburg Russia they were invited to compete & train in junior level FIAS sambo events.

I've heard of sparktak. My friend's friends have trained at spartak and last I've heard, they train at NYAC to try and compete in the olympics.

has anyone trained at spartak? or at nycombat sambo? I'm looking to take this beyond as just a hobby

I've dropped in there. Steve is a very good coach. He really takes the time to go around the class and help people with their technique.

Class was very small and intimate. Training would be similar to a wrestling/judo cross in that we worked two takedown techniques and then drilled the crap out of it.

Definitely more groundwork than most Judo schools (haven't been to any other Sambo schools) with an emphasis on strong submissions. You won't find world-class guard-passing or anything like that here though, as that's not the focus of the sport.

Possibly the most affordable school in Manhattan.
